Elimination Communication -Week 3
Day 15-31st Dec08 Wed (cranky day yet again)
In the morning, I found out he has poo in his diaper and was the rather wet kind after I changed him. Luckily, I make it a practice to change him after the feed or I wouldn’t know because he was making uncomfortable sounds that I thought he wanted to eat.
He peeed upon cue after I took him out of the room 30mins later. Then, I anticipated he might want to go again at 0850hrs. Waited til 40mins this time instead of 30mins as he seemed to be able to hold for longer these days. He was squirming a bit in my lap so I thought it was time. And he immediately went. Great!Always feel a rush of happiness everytime I managed to communicate this with him.
He then napped and was dry again for 1hr 20mins! Just before I fed him however at 1030hrs, he peeed immediately and also peeed again about 10mins into the feed. I just let him peeed on the nappy cloth for convenience. Not sure how to not make him pee during a feed? Hopefully, he’ll learn that soon.
I decide to slow down the potty time and drag it til 40mins before I put him on the potty so he does not protest so much like yesterday. And he went! Great.
He then napped about 1200hrs for about 50mins and remained dry! After he woke up, tried bringing him to the bathroon sink but he was uninterested. Then, I tried pottying but this time, he was very cranky and protested!
Finally, I took him out of it and he promptly peeed onto the floor. He had held for 1hr 35mins.
After the feeding which he peeed during, he was able to hold for 50mins again where I got him to potty.
Took him to nap and he woke up 1 hr later crying and dry. Felt that he actually wants to pee but couldn’t, that’s why he cried?? I then potty him about 10mins after and this time, he could after calming down with a song.
Next I successfully got him to potty again 1hr 10mins later with some pottying at 30mins interval but he didn’t want to. Was quite tired each time I try to get him on the potty because he would be crying badly.
I’m not sure whether he’s protesting about me bringing him to potty too soon? Has his patterns changed? No longer at 30mins intervals? or is he just too stress?
Then, he napped again but was wet when he woke up. After the bath, he held it again and refused potty immediately and 30mins after. Hubby took over then and finally, he managed to ‘squeeze’ out two drops. Just two drops? I was surprised. Was he so reluctant to pee into the potty and immediately stop himself upon hearing hubby go “ssh”?
Right after, during the feed, he relieved himself on the nappy cloth.
Finally, he held it again for 50mins before we managed to get him to pee into the potty. It was time for bed and he was diapered after that.
Night-Time Awareness
I noticed however that at the 11plus changing time, his diaper was dry and not used! Whoa… so he didn’t pee at all during his sleep.
I wondered if he is getting to stress about eliminating and thus holding back when he’s not supposed to? I hope he’ll begin to understand how to let go tomorrow. Really wish this phobia of him eliminating will go away soon.
What I noticed:
-No pees during the 8plus to 1100hrs sleep as he peeed just before bed.
-Has pooped the wet poo today again in the early morning, just like yesterday’s. No more catching of hard poop now.
What’s new today:
-Bring him to potty only 40mins later if possible, so he does not have so much stress.

Day 16-01 Jan 09 Thu (lasting longer time in-betweens)
He pooped yet again in his diaper early morning. I didn’t change him during the 7 plus feed because I woke up late after feeding him at 4plus and he didn’t even call out to me at 0730hrs. Strange. He was just content to lie in his warm wet poop. Hmm.
So EC was started at 0900hrs. He was quickly bathed after I wiped him clean and 10mins after his bath, he peeed again while feeding. Thereafter, I didn’t stress him and just play with him until he was crying a bit and we decided to put him on the potty. I was afraid I might do it too often til he’s afraid of eliminating or felt stressful.
It was already 1hr 5mins after the previous and this time, he peeed into the potty without much complaints! Great start. Hope he’s finally beginning to know his own body.
Alas, I didn’t catch one 30mins later because I don’t want to stress him and thought he could hold longer. Seemed not the case. He took a nap thereafter and was dry for 40mins. His naps are getting short when he usually always sleeps at least 1 hr.
Then, I went out and he was cloth-diapered by Daddy til 1hr plus. He stayed dry after an afternoon nap and Daddy successfully potty him this time! Daddy was so happy and proud to tell me that. hee.
But then, he missed it later at 40mins.
Then, he went during the feed again which I didn’t put a potty too so he wetted his nappy.
40mins later, he went in the potty. Oooh, time intervals has increased to 40mins?
He stayed dry during the nap after and I got him to pee in the bathroom sink! Everything seemed rather smooth-sailing today. He does not protest so much now.
One hour later, he was fed and during the feed, he stayed dry and only peeed 10 mins after the start of it which I caught in the small potty. Then, we waited 40mins again and successfully got him to pee into the potty just before bedtime.
Night-Time Awareness
He’s no longer sleeping through the night as he kept waking up during the night because he either peeed or wants to pee. I’m too tired to do EC with him and just pacified him. At this stage, I don’t if I should change his diaper because I’m too tired to move…
What I noticed:
-He would rub his legs together and squirm a bit if he feels like peeing. Though not always an accurate cue.
-Has pooped the wet poo today yet again in the early morning. Getting regular?
-Able to stay dry for 40mins now for a number of times instead of 20-30mins. Thus, total times of peeing during the day was about 13 times compared to 18-21times.
What’s new today:
-Daddy has first potty success with Dar today.

Day 17-02Jan 09 Fri (Smooth-sailing)
Again, I encountered the wet poop this morning. At 7 plus, he was squirming as usual. I think I’ll need to check his diaper before I feed him tomorrow to see if he poops before or after the 0730hrs feed.
We missed two in the morning because he was brought back to the room for nap after 0830hrs with hubby in the room. He did not actually napped til 0930hrs and when I went to check on him, his nappy was already wet.
Thereafter, he slept and woke up wet and crying loudly. Tried to pee him in the sink but he didn’t want to.
We then bathe him and after that, during the feed, caught one pee into the little potty bowl.
Today, I decide to be more relaxed with him and wait for him to give me the cue. We read some storybooks and after reading for a while, I noticed him starting to straighten his legs and rub his feet together and squirming. I quickly potty him and he went! Wow.. that’s a clear sign.
Then, hubby took care of him while I was using the comp and he potty him successfully yet again after 35mins! He said, he heard Dar give a small cry, straightened his legs and rubbed his feet. And he immediately went after being placed onto the potty! I’m really happy about this. Is he starting to get it afterall?
Both times so far, he did not fuss at all and just went very quietly. Great progress! We would always bring him to the bathroom to wash up and wipe dry. Give him a kiss on sides of his forehead and tell him, he’s a good boy after he successfully peeed into the potty.
He then took a nap at 1230hrs and after his nap, we went out for his first swim.
What I noticed:
-Rubbing his legs together and squirming while we hold him has became a clear sign.
-Hubby noticed once that he gave a little cry out, before squirming and rubbing. Maybe that’s another sign?
What’s new today:
-Daddy has 2nd potty success with Dar today!

Day 18-03Jan 09 Sat
Yesterday was a tiring night so I woke up late today with hubby handling Dar in the morning. He was in diapers again til at 0900hrs, he pooed in his diaper and we changed him.
Just before bath, I managed to potty him again but shortly about 15mins after, he peeed again. That’s strange to me. Maybe bath relaxes his muscles?
Then he stayed dry for 45mins before finally peeing into the potty. Before his nap, he did not want to pee so I let him nap. The result was that he woke up with a wet nappy. I think I must start the practice of peeing him before bed.
We went out again after that so today was a short EC day.
What I noticed:
-Still will pee after bath even though he just peeed before bath.
- Need to pee him before bed if he has not gone for 30mins so he does not wake up with wet nappy.

Day 19-04Jan 09 Sun
He pooed early into his diaper again around feeding time of 0730hrs. Hmm, it’s like pretty regular but I’m too sleepy in the early morning to bother about poos. Will try to observe more and see what I should do.
He was taken care of by Daddy again the early morning and Daddy took off his diaper only after 9am. But he managed to successfully potty him 15mins after. Daddy is getting great at pottying Darius.
He was bathed and during feeding, he peeed again and this time, I held a potty bowl over his legs to catch it. Yeah! success. Soon, he took a nap but woke up with a wet nappy. Oh well, missed that.
About 30mins after, we missed again as we were busy with stuff. He didn’t make any noise about his peeing. Sometimes, he’s just contented to lie in his pee. Guess he still needs more time to know exactly when he’s about to pee. We are okay with it if we are busy and didn’t notice it. Just pee in the nappy cloth isn’t a big problem at all.
I tried to potty him after 40mins but he didn’t want to and it was time for his feeding. And gosh, he actually pooed twice in his nappy while feeding. After cleaning one time round, he decided he still needs to poo more and did a second time 10mins after. Arghh! Had to clean again.
However, he remained dry for 1hr later during his nap and about 10mins after he woke up, I successfully potty him.
He then stayed dry for an amazing 1hr 10mins and peeed into his nappy which I missed because we tried potty him around 40mins and gave up when he didn’t go. He peeed upon feeding again and then took a short nap of 50mins during which he stayed dry!
He’s really getting better at staying dry during naps now.
What’s new today:
- Had two poos today in the afternoon even though he already pooed in the morning.

Day 20-05Jan 09 Mon
Morning poop again which I only noticed around 0900hrs because he slept through. I put him in nappy cloth after that and missed one 30mins after because I thought he’ll go around 40mins.
Just before bath however and only 25mins after, he was squirming as usual on my lap while reading stories and I managed to pee him into the potty.
After his feed, he stayed dry and took a nap of 50mins, staying dry for total of 1hr 10mins. I then caught his woke up pee in the bathroom sink while he chatted away to the mirror.
Alas, I missed one 20mins after but subsequently caught one in the main bathroom sink 50mins later.
He stayed dry again for 50mins before peeing during his feed. 20mins after, he peeed a bit in the nappy and while washing his privates at the toilet, I thought to just have a go cueing him to pee in the sink. The earlier bit seemed too little and somehow I had an intuition. He peeed quite a lot into the sink then! Wow… I must try it next time if I notice his pee in the nappy cloths are of a little amount.
He took his nap after that and remained dry for 1hr 50mins. Tried peeing him in the bathroom sink but with no success. I then got him to pee into the potty. Sometimes, he needs a little bit more time to ‘tell’ the muscles to pee and the little walk into the living room gave him time. It’s great that he now pees before bedtime and then pees upon waking up with cue so he does not wet himself during sleep.
During the late afternoon nap he was dry again for 1hr 10mins but didn’t want to pee when he woke up. It was time for his feeding and thus, I just let him peeed into the nappy cloth while feeding. Feeding always relaxes his muscles for a pee.
Then, we waited for his signs again and didn’t think about the intervals.
At this stage, I’m not so hang up about 30-40mins time intervals anymore. I’ll notice if it has been sometime but I’ll wait for him to communicate with me about his need first.
So he indicated his need by some fussiness at about 1hr and we potty him with success.
It was time for his sleep and he was diapered for the night.
What I noticed:
-Having a little miss pee means there’s still chance of getting more of his pee in the bathroom or potty.
What’s new today:
Caught a pee in the bathroom sink after there’s a miss.

Day 21-06 Jan 09 Tue (Still needing to know how to relax to release)
This morning, he pooed again in his diaper during the feed but after I changed him, he pooed again into the nappy cloth! Is he getting more aware now that he’s not supposed to poo into his diaper and thus didn’t finish pooping?
I missed his cue for two times after that because his pee suddenly became frequent at only 20mins intervals. Finally, I manage to get him to potty just before his morning nap. Recently, he has been waking up at half-past seven and then nap again at 0900hrs.
Alas, it was a wet nap and just before his bath, he peeed yet again without informing me. Totally not in sync today. After missing several pees again at very frequent intervals and finally thought I missed it again when he peeed into his pants, I tried getting him to pee into the sink while I was washing him and he did!
So it was like yesterdays’, missed a bit in the pants, and caught it fully after I cue him again over a potty.
He then stayed dry for 30mins before needing a nap but I couldn’t get him to pee before the nap. Need not have worried however as he stayed dry for 1hr. He woke up crying but couldn’t pee no matter how long I stood at the sink to cue him. So I got him to sit on the potty and finally after some crying, he peeed. It’s like he has suddenly forgotten how to release again.
He then took a long nap of 1hr 10mins and cried. When I checked, he has wetted himself. Then, he wetted himself again right after I changed him! So I should have brought him to the toilet or potty as it might be an ‘on-top’ pee too. Hmm.
He seemed tired so I let him nap back again and he stayed dry for 1hr 10mins.
We went out after that so EC was put on hold.
What I noticed:
- After a miss, it’s still necessary to try an over the potty or sink as there might be more.
What’s new today:
-Getting aware of his pooping and might not eliminate all at one go.
