Early last month, we shared our problem with the MagMag Level 2 Spout Bottle where the spout would become mouldy soon after use and we had to keep buying new spouts for replacement each time.
After Googling the web, we realised that we were not alone in facing this problem as mothers all over the world were highlighting their woes over their moulded spouts too. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find any solution being posted so it appeared that this moulding problem wasn’t something that could be resolved easily.
Seeing that Darius really loves using the spout for his milk, we decided to try out our own method to resolve the problem, and here’s what we do:
Immediately after every use, we would wash the spout and bottle (we have been using Pigeon’s Bottle Nipple and Vegetables Detergent since Darius’ birth) and after rinsing the spout with tap water, we put it into a small bowl and pour hot water over it.
Our objectives are simple: To remove any remains of the milk from the spout as soon as possible and to immerse it in hot water to kill whatever bacteria or substance that were responsible in encouraging the growth of mould.
After about 30 minutes or more later, we would pick up the spout, dry it with a clean cloth (we also use the cloth to dry up the rest of the bottle) before assembling it back to the bottle, ensuring that the cap of the bottle was properly shut tight. This would quarantine the dried internals of the bottle (including the spout) from the outside (moist) air, minimising any possible mould invasion.
In summary, these are the steps we have taken after every milk feed:
- Clean the spout and bottle with detergent before putting the spout into a bowl of hot water
- Remove the spout after some time and dry it with a clean and dry cloth
- Together with the rest of the cleaned and dried bottle parts, assemble back the bottle
So after we have implemented this 3-step anti-mould method to our spout bottle, what have been our outcome ?
Till yesterday, it has been more than a month since our first use of that particular spout and after going through around a hundred uses, we are pleased to see that not a single black spot have made it on the spout! So looks like these extra steps have definitely helped!
On the other hand though, we still decided to discard the spout last night, because after these repeated uses and Darius’ strong biting strength, the opening at the tip of the spout had started to give way and droplets of milk would start to ooze out whenever the bottle was tilted. ^^|
Still, this spout has lasted longer than any of our previous spouts that ended up being infestated by mould so we will continue with our anti-mould measures for all our new and upcoming spouts. If you have been facing mouldy issues with your spouts too, hope this information will be helping you too! ^^

Interesting!!
My Yuzhe also drinks from this MagMag cup but he’s using the straw instead of the sprout. We also change quite often not because of the mould but due to “wear-n-tear”. After a few bites from the naughty boy, the tip of the straw will be torn liaoz ….
Mrs Sze,
Ya the straw is less prone to mould, unless there’s some food substance stucked inside for some time.
Looks like your boy has strong biting strength too~ ^^
