Darius’ Pillow Upgrade

Posted Under (Darius' 22-24mths) on Saturday, 29 May 2010 at 9:30 pm

Darius has been sleeping on his BabySafe’s Infant Pillow since many months back. As he has been liking his pillow (he especially enjoys falling face down onto it when he runs onto his bed), the thought of ‘upgrading’ his pillow has not crossed our minds until recently.

The Infant Pillow is very flat and is purposely designed this way, as how its manufactor describes:

Baby Safe Infant Pillow is designed to elevate infant’s head for comfort and easier breathing. Unlike a soft and fluffy pillow, Baby Safe Infant Pillow’s firm and flat surface reduces the risk of infant suffocation. It provides a hygienic sleeping area for the baby’s head. The anti-allergenic and excellent ventilation properties help prevent babies from allergies and asthma as no dust or particles are present.

True enough, we have been satisfied with the pillow all these while, until recently when we feel that he should be upgrading to a kid’s pillow instead. As his body continues to grow, we feel that his neck should now require more support when he’s lying face up, just like us adults. Catherine and I have been using contour/support pillows so we know the importance of getting firm support for the neck while we are sleeping.

We have also realised that Darius has been preferring to sleep face down since a few months back. We didn’t really think much of that though since he is still having a good night’s sleep nightly so far, but recently I began to think why he had changed from his previous sleeping position (lying face up) to a facing down position. I started to suspect that it might be due to his flat infant pillow which did not offer sufficient support for his neck if he was in a facing up position.

With that, we went to purchase the Kid’s Pillow (also from BabySafe) on Thursday. It has a contoured shape, just like the type of support pillows we adults are using.

Then on Friday noon, we put the new pillow to its debut test while Darius was taking his afternoon nap. Without complain, he laid down in a facing up  position and dozed off within minutes. Maybe he was tired out from our morning walk and video watching, but still we were glad he had not fussed over his new pillow at all. We have read that many kids his age tend to grow attached to their ‘smelly’ pillows or bolsters and would not allow them to be taken away from them. This has not been a case for Darius and we are thankful for that.

Darius sure looked comfortable sleeping using his new pillow

In the night, he was sleeping comfortably too. Hopefully he will learn to sleep in a position that he feels most natural and comfortable with.

On the downside, changing to this newer and longer pillow means that we will have to pack it along for our upcoming overseas trip, instead of his compact infant pillow. ^^|
