Where’s Spot? By Eric Hill is a book that we’ve bought for Darius for quite a while already but it was only recently that he had gotten more interested in it, bringing the book to us so that we could participate in the search for Spot the dog together.
The book begins with Sally, Spot’s mother, looking for him during dinner time. She would start searching in the wardrobe, boxes, grandfather clock, stairs etc in the house for any sign for her playful puppy. Each page consists of a flippable portion that allows the reader to flip open to see if Spot is indeed hiding inside/behind the said location.
Of course, the initial searches for Spot are unsuccessful (else the book will end very quickly, isn’t it ^^) with various animals, sometimes weird ones (snakes and crocodile in the house?) saying ‘no’ from their hiding places to show that Spot is not there.
Through this book, the names of some locations at home are reinforced into Darius’ mind, such as the bed and clock (though he often refers to my watch as a ‘clock’ :p).
Unlike before where Darius would open the flaps quietly while we flipped the pages, he is now more interactive and vocal:
His soft-spoken (and sometimes sad/disappointed?) ‘no’s never fail to bring smiles to Catherine and I, though it’s unlikely that we will still feel this way when he uses this word to oppose our instructions in the future. ^^|

So cute!
Btw, I always wanted to ask this qn: how did you manage to teach him flip the book without tearing them apart?
Dylan is so violent with his books that I have to stop reading them to him as he practically tears them. If I stop him from tearing the book, he will cry as he wants to hold the book. He just doesn’t know his strength.
Hmm..I would say he learnt it by himself but also because I limited his touch on certain books. Initially when he was less than a year old, I always only let him flip board books. (the Bright and Early Board books). Soft pages like this ‘Spot’ book are only read to him and I disallow him to flip much but would show him how to. That’s why this book was bought for a long time, left on the high shelf and forgotten and only recently re-introduced to him again because he has learnt to flip properly. Even so, sometimes, he does still treat it a bit roughly where he’ll flip the page without closing the flaps. Luckily, the pages are still quite thick to withstand his treatment.
He started flipping pages slightly before 1 year old by himself when we just left the books there. (only board books). I don’t really trust him with flimsy books. After he turned 1 year old, I started reading soft pages book with him and he just learnt to turn them properly with time at my supervision. Only when I felt he was ‘ready’ when I saw how he handled them, then I let him flip those soft pages by himself.
We were both surprised also that he knew how to handle the soft pages properly. (http://www.ourbabyoflove.com/2009/09/21/darius-and-his-books/)
Hi Cat, thanks for sharing.
Tried what you did but he wouldn’t allow for he wants to be the one flipping the books. Hence, I have stopped reading books to him but leaving him those board books for him to flip. He likes them but has no patience for me to read a page before he flips them and he wants to flip back and forth. Guess I just have to be more patient and keep on trying!
