Fun With Food and Fridge

We’ve gotten our S$100 Toy R’ Us vouchers from Polliwogs for three weeks but we haven’t had the chance to use them till last Saturday. We headed for the branch at United Square while taking the opportunity to shop around the mall.

Soon after, we picked up four items which made up slightly past S$100, consisting of Vtech’s ABC Food Fun, Doug & Melissa’s See and Spell wooden toy, a set of slice-able toy fruits/vegetables and a simple 3-piece puzzle. Initially, we thought to get the Vtech Phonics Desk for him as he liked it and kept playing with it. However, it was also learning about phonics and alphabets and he already have many such toys.

Out of the four items, the most expensive one would be the ABC Food Fun toy, as it easily took up half of the vouchers we possessed. Despite its high price however, we thought it would be worth getting since food and fruits are things that Darius does not usually come across in learning and the attractive magnetic pieces and sounds from the toy fridge would help catch his interest.

All in all, we spent several hours at United Square and by the time we headed home, all three of us were already very tired (Darius felt asleep in the stroller after his dinner) and had a good night’s rest soon after.

The next day (Sunday), Darius woke me up early in the morning, probably due to his usual weekday routine (which he has to wake up early to go school). Sleepy eyed, I brought him out to the living room and unpacked the ABC Food Fun toy for him. He was eagerly anticipating the opening as he watched me attentively as I unpacked the toy fridge and the colourful food/fruit pieces from the box.

Each food piece comes with an alphabet printed on it, which had certainly helped catch Darius’ attention. In particular, these pieces were first to catch his eyes: Apple, Grapes, Honey and Orange, most probably due to their corresponding alphabets or colours. Each of the pieces is very well made so maybe that’s the reason why the toy is so expensive.

After fiddling with the toy for a while, something else began to catch his attention instead — the soft voice of a girl that says ‘Hi’ and ‘Bye’ to him whenever he opens and closes the fridge door. In fact, he got so fascinated with it that he ended up spending most of the time opening and closing the fridge door just to listen to her voice while mimicking (or responding to?) her voices, speaking ‘Hi’ and ‘Bye’. ^^|

Although he might have gotten distracted by the voices, I’m okay with him ignoring the food pieces for now, as long as he remains interested in his new toy. I’m sure he will get bored over the ‘Hi’/'Bye’ thing pretty soon and will divert his attention and curiosity towards the food pieces.

Later on in the morning, we set up a magnetic white board for him in the living room, mounting it onto the wall beside his book shelf. We then placed the toy fridge and food pieces on the board. This would make them very accessible to Darius and also make it easier for housekeeping. So far, he would still bring the fridge down from the board and place it on the sofa before playing with it. Guess he still feel it’s more comfortable this way. ^^
