Our New Light and Compact Stroller

Catherine and I had been looking for a lighter alternative to our Maclaren Techno XT stroller, which we have used for Darius since March 2009. This is a sturdy and comfortable stroller and definitely worth the price we had paid for it. However, there were times when we felt that it was more bulky and inconvenient as we would want it to be, especially during short trips within our neighbourhood and overseas trips.

Therefore, since a few months ago, we started looking out for a new stroller/buggy that would fulfill our requirements of being light-weight and compact. Of course, we would expecting some trade-offs from our existing stroller, such as a smaller basket (or none at all), less sturdy make, probably less comfortable for Darius and not being able to change the inclination of the seat (so that Darius could lie down and rest).

Since this stroller would be mostly used only during short trips, these trade-offs would not be much of a concern. When looking out for suitable strollers, we also made sure that it has a canopy above to shade Darius when the weather is hot.

The first suitable stroller that we came across was at the GIANT Hypermart in Sembawang Shopping Centre. This Lucky Baby’s Tour buggy (Model Code: 516003) was selling at slightly less than S$100. Weighing at only 3.0kg, this was a very light stroller and it looked pretty comfortable too. There was also a shoulder strap available for easy carrying after being folded. The only downside that I noticed was that after folding, the stroller wasn’t as compact as I had expected.

Unfortunately, only this last display set was available, which was having some defects on its handle. We enquired the other GIANT outlets in Singapore but none of them had any stock too, and there was no definite date when the new stocks would arrive. I’ve actually left my contact with the sales staff but no news from them thus far.

Following that, I came across another suitable-looking stroller at FairPrice Xtra in AMK Hub, also made by Lucky Baby. The model name’s Runner and its model code is 500538. This stroller was about half the price of the Tour buggy but of course it comes with a trade-off. It weighs a hefty 4.9kg and that made us decided not to go for it, despite it looking light-weight. Furthermore, it does not come with a shoulder strap so carrying it while carrying Darius on our other hand would not be easy. On the other hand, this stroller is more compact than the Tour after folded up.

At this point, we had thought of going to the local distributor of Lucky Baby products – Taime Pte Ltd. However, its factory is quite far off (Chai Chee) and its only opened during weekdays’ office hours. If we were to order online, there would be a S$25 delivery charge (since our order would be less than S$150) so it would not be worth it for our case.

We put off our search until last weekend at Kiddy Palace @ Marina Square, when we finally found and purchased the stroller that was in stock and met our expectations. We had previously saw it at another branch but when we returned to buy it, it was already out of stock.

The brand was GoodBaby and I must admit that was the first time I’ve come across the brand. Despite that, we were satisfied with the durable make of the stroller and we had a smooth, quick spin with Darius on it. It weighs only 3.8kg, is equipped with a shoulder strap and is very compact after being folded up. Furthermore, it has a stand which allows the folded stroller to stand upright.

It comes in two colours, blue and red. The red colour stock just came in on that day and we bought this red/black model. At S$99, we bought the stroller without much hesitation and we were glad to have ended our long search for a light-weight and compact stroller.

So far, we have only brought Darius out on this stroller once, when we were heading to a nearby shopping mall. We were satisfied with the ease of bringing it along when Darius was not sitting in it, carrying it across the overhead bridge, boarding and alighting from buses. We had no issue pushing it around while Darius was in the stroller and he seemed pretty comfortable in it too. ^^
