Usborne Books

Bought new books for Dar when we passed by the MPH at Parco Marina Bay beside Millenia Walk on Saturday.

I have been looking for Usborne’s Phonic Readers Storybooks since I read about them from some online sellers for sometime. They are simple storybooks that introduce phonics to young children by combining words that sounds the same in a story and has nice illustrations. Excerpt of the introduction from the book:

Synthetic phonics is the process of reading by sounding the individual phonemes in a word and then synthesizing or blending them to read the whole word. Children who learn to read using synthetic phonics start by learning individual phonemes, then soon learn to sound and blend in order to read whole words. This give them the confidence to read unfamiliar words and tackle new texts, an important step towards independent reading.

I tried Kinokuniya bookstore before but there wasn’t any. Therefore, when we passed by the MPH store and saw two shelves dedicated to Usborne books, I quickly went in and yeah!  They have a large variety of all the Usborne’s books. I love the Usborne’s informative and educational books. Two of Darius’ favourite books “That’s not my train!” and “The Three Little Pigs” are from Usborne.

I quickly look for the Phonic Readers Storybooks, especially, “Fat Cat on a mat”. I wanted this particular book because Darius likes cat and reading something he likes would make learning more fun. Hubby spotted it for me and it was the last book on the shelf though while they have many of the others. But even so, only three titles were on the shelf and not the entire series of twelve books.

So I took all three books in case I wouldn’t be able to find them again. The titles were, Fat Cat on a mat‘, ‘Big pig on a dig‘, ‘Ted’s shed. If he likes them, I’ll be sure to go back for more.

Excerpt from ‘Fat cat on the mat’:

Fat Cat sees a bee. Fat cat flees up a tree.
“I don’t like bees!” yelps Fat Cat.
“I don’t like bees and I don’t like trees.” “I don’t like bees or trees”.

Some flaps included so Dar can flip it to discover additional text.

There was an entire shelf of Dr Seuss’ series too! So I found ‘Ten Apples Up On Top’ and In a People House’. These two stories are stories he view everyday on Youtube which I didn’t owned nor know the story before I watched the videos. So I wanted to get the real books to read to him properly. These days, he kept telling me, apples apples and showed me his fingers. (I showed him how to form two, three, four with his fingers as it is read) but I really do not know how to continue without watching the video. Anyway, Youtube really helped to introduce the stories to us! I also bought ‘Green eggs and ham’ earlier because I watched the story and liked it.

I’m looking for ‘Great Day for Up’, another story he likes. Can’t find it there.

The bookstore also happened to have 20% discount on all regular items and gave us a free membership (will have discount of 10% on books and stationery) after we bought $42 worth of stuff (5 books). Not sure whether the promotion is still on though and maybe it’s only at PARCO @ Marina Bay. They have a upcoming Expo sale on the 25th of June to 27th of June with discounts up to 80 percent.
