…and that refers to his haircut session yesterday.
Catherine had been the one cutting his hair over the past few months and she didn’t face much problem dealing with Darius during those times. She kept him distracted using some story DVDs and cut his hair with a pair of scissors on his high chair. Yesterday however, we thought of bringing him to a professional barber/hairdresser who has the appropriate equipment (e.g. electric razor) to provide Darius with a more shaven look. (Cat: Because my relatives kept complaining about my ‘skills’, saying he has a girl’s fringe aka wa-wa hairstyle…they do not how it’s always a struggle to cut his hair in a salon…sigh.)
And so, we went over to an Express Cut outlet where they charge S$10 for a 10-minute cut. We had seen them cutting the hair for other kids so thought Darius would fit in nicely too, especially when there is a small television screen in front of each chair which we believed could keep him distracted.
The moment he sat on the barber chair however, he started to resist with all his might. Darius is very stubborn when people are ‘forcing’ him to do things he doesn’t want to, which in this case, to sit down on that chair.
The television screen in front of him didn’t help distract him at all, so I resorted to our iPod Touch as I flashed it in front of his face with one of his favourite story videos running on it. That did catch his attention and calm him down for a while, only to be broken the moment the hairdresser started cutting his hair with her pair of scissors.
Things got worse when it came to the razor part, where the sound of the the electric razor frightened him and tears immediately came down his eyes, leading to an unstoppable scream for help. We could only try our best to hold and calm him down with words and songs (which were in vain at his terrifying state) while we waited for the hairdresser to finish her job.
The hairdresser did not let Darius’ screams affect her professionalism as she made sure she did a thorough cut. With Darius tearing and sweating throughout the session, many rashes appeared on his cheeks and neck, which probably had made him felt even more uncomfortable.
When the whole thing was over, we were satisfied with his new haircut. As for Darius, he calmed down soon after we carried him out of the shop and cleaned his face and neck with a moist cloth. It must had been a scary experience for him earlier, since he woke up several times later in the night crying.
Yes, we liked how he looked with his new, neat hairstyle, but we ain’t sure if we were going to bring him through another round of fightening ordeal when his hair grows long again. Or should we just invest in an electric razor (though we’ve no idea where to find one) and have his hair done up in the comfort of our home?

Phillips has one shaver for hair. I rem seeing that it’s quite easy to use. Perhaps you can check that out to see if it’s meets your needs.
I just brought Dylan for his 3rd hair cut on Sunday and thank goodness, he was ok this time round (compared to the previous time where he, too, was afraid of the razor.). In fact, he was so good that the aunties in the shop couldn’t stop praising him. However, that seems to still shock him cos he was also waking up crying several times last nite!
Chloe,
Thanks for the recommendations! Will check out on the shaver.
Glad to hear that Dylan is generally alright with cutting his hair by strangers! ^^
Hwa Xia sells the shaver too.. specially for children’s hair. I didn’t buy but I saw the lady use it for my 4-month-old baby’s haircut. Seemed fast & easy!
