Back then when Darius had just turned 1-year-old, he and I had an enjoyable cycling date along Sungei Sembawang. Since then, I had been wanting to bring Catherine along and this was finally fulfilled yesterday.
The weather was cloudy when we decided to bring out our bicycles for a nearby outdoor cycling trip. Darius whined when I stepped out of our door without him and so I had to leave the gate half opened while I pumped the tyres and applied lubricant onto the gears. This way, he would understand that we were not going to leave him behind and he would obediently wait for our permission to come out of the house, though he did get tempted to step out bare-footed himself once or twice. ^^
When all our preparations were done, we placed him on the child seat on my bike and off we went towards Sungei Sembawang, which was about a 10-minute ride away.
The path along the canal was rather void of people except for a few joggers. We continued to peddle along the path unti we crossed a bridge and saw a long straight path ahead, where we placed Darius down to roam about happily.
He was a little wary of his new environment initially, but soon warmed up his ‘engine’ and ran while we pushed our bikes to follow him closely.
Till now, the weather had been cooling and so we weren’t sweating much. However, soon after, the sun decided to sneak out from the thick clouds above and from then on, we were exposed to an abudance of Vitamin D.
Darius could barely keep his eyes opened under the glaring sun and his movements started to become sluggish under the heat. We continued to hydrate him to make sure he didn’t get heat exhaustion.
At one point, we came across a small hill on our right with a beautiful backdrop of clouds. I encouraged Catherine to climb up to the top so we could capture a picturesque moment of it and it ended up as an ideal desktop wallpaper. ^^
Meanwhile, Darius was getting tired so we placed him back onto my bike and we cycled on till we reached the Sembawang God of Wealth Temple, where we took an U-turn and headed back towards where we came from.
Along the way, we decided to check out the roof garden situated between some flats. Taking a lift up to the 2nd storey, we accessed the garden conveniently with our bikes. The place was full of plants, flowers and vegetables; the residents must have made some great effort to get the place become what it is today. This sure was an unique sight in the midst of our urban jungle.
As for Darius, he excitedly roamed around the place after we freed him from his child seat, playing catching with us amongst the pavillions.
We also brought him to the playground in the garden where he kept going at the spinners of the tic-tac-toe section. Unfortunately, the playground was badly vandalised with plenty of vulgar words scribbled all about. Youngsters these days…
With that, we rested up at Sun Plaza for our dinner before making our way home. The weather had been kind to us for not raining as it had been consistently raining in the late afternoon over the past few days.
Our cycling trip had been a good way for us to get some sun while and building up our bodies! Time to start planning for our next ride! ^^
