Language Surprises again… I love recording these…

1) Hubby heard him said, “Star” many times while he was playing a jackpot game (Vincent: Virtual credits only; no real money involved! ^^) on the computer and a picture of star appeared. He has never said star before but we read to him the word in storybooks, in books about shapes.

2) He came to hubby one morning and said to him, “Bear…bear”. It’s something I recently kept saying to him because there is a bear picture in his feeding bowl who is kicking a ball. And when we reached the end of his feeding and the pictures appeared, I always use the spoon and point to the bear and say, “Bear”, then to the ball and say, “Ball”. Then, I make it funny by tapping the bear and ball picture repeatedly with a beat, “Bear, ball, bear, ball, bear bear, ball”. Or going very fast tapping them and chanting. Darius always chuckled at these actions, finding it very funny. He would also tapped the pictures himself by taking over the spoon and I would do the chant whenever he touched one of the pictures. BUT, I never expected him to really know how to say, “Bear”. He might also have learnt it because we had been watching the Dolphin Media Story DVDs and the lead character is a Bear. He would watch the English Words at the end of the show and the first word that comes up is always, “Bear”.

3) These few days, he has been CALLING us all of a sudden. He actually says, “妈妈…妈妈” (all first tone) when he comes to me due to being bored or something. And he also calls his Papa, “爸爸…爸爸..” But he still does not greet him when Papa opens the door and stepped in though we repeatedly tell him to call. We were so happy to hear him finally call us. He does know how to say those words but never once used intentionally to call us.

4) Besides, his Mama, he has also followed up with the sweetest word on earth, “爱你。。。(love you)” I had recorded it just a few days ago in the post Snippets #8. But then, he was just uttering “爱你。。。爱你。。。” but NOW, he actually says, “爱你。。。妈妈。。”. Then, says it again right after. With the 妈妈 at the back. My heart melts everytime he comes to me and says this at any time of the day, like when I’m using the computer or just sitting at the sofa reading my newspaper.
He knew this would get my attention because I seemed to be ignoring him and therefore used it. Thus, I was thinking whether he was just parroting me because as I mentioned before I always say it back to him, “妈妈爱你”. But he did not use “妈妈” first but always say “爱你”….pause then “妈妈” when he looked at me. So Hubby is convinced that he does seemed to understand they are two separate words and the meaning because when he says it, I’ll smile and give him a BIG cuddly hug and a kiss.
Hubby is super jealous of this and wishes he’ll say, “爸爸。。。爱你” too. But then…well… he has to say it himself first to Darius in order for him to reciprocate right? I say this to Darius very often.

5) Today I tested him with the Chinese Flashcards just to see if he still remembers

I showed him the Words part without the pictures. I showed him Flower but he did not recognised it. Only after I turned over to show the picture that he said, “Wu..ah…”.

Then, I showed him the text of Car. There’s a Chinese Word, “车” with the english word, “car” written small above it. And he said, “Car” almost immediately.  Wow! Showed that he recognised the English word or Chinese! Because I did not show him the picture at all.

I showed him the Chinese Word of Cat and he did not recognised it. So I said, “Mao!”. He immediately went, “Mmmmmm!” in his mimicking of the cat sound. So he understood that “Mao” means Cat because I did not show him the picture at all too.

Behaviour

He seemed to understand to leave me working on the computer on stuff now once I’ve entertained him. That I do need my own time too. He just played quietly by himself beside me in the room or walked in and out. Before, he always brings things to me, take my hand to point at the things, indicating he wants them read or wants me to play it with him. I was so frustrated that I complained bitterly to Hubby. Suddenly, with all these new learning activities I’m doing with him, he had gotten sufficient time with me and was thus satisfied? Hope this will continue.
