On Saturday morning, we brought Darius down to our neighbouring clinic for his second MMRV vaccination jab (first jab two months ago), which had been delayed for few weeks due to several reasons.
Following his fall on the previous night, Darius’ bruises was looking worse due to ‘blue-blacks’ and ulcers appearing on his lower lip, where he had bitten onto when he fell face-first during the fall. We would be taking this opportunity to check with the doctor if we needed to take note of anything regarding his injuries and also to get an ulcer cream for his lip. Anyway despite his injuries, Darius was still behaving normally and eating well without fuss.
Side-track a bit… When I brought him out for a walk early in that morning, I noticed passers-by taking a longer look at Darius’ face than usual, very likely due to the bruise marks on his face. I couldn’t help but wonder if they were thinking that he was being abused by us or something, as the wound marks do resemble him being beaten up. ^^|
Okay, back at the clinic, we got to see the doctor pretty quickly since there weren’t many patients around. The doctor was slightly surprised upon seeing Darius’ injuries and asked us how he got it, whether it’s a fall, car accident or something (of course he never mentioned ‘child abuse’ haha). He then advised us to watch for signs of head injury over the next few days, such as constant drowsiness or vomiting. However, looking at how active Darius was, it was quite unlikely that he had suffered any internal injury.
While the doctor was preparing for the vaccination, I asked if the injection could be made at the thigh area, like for the first jab. However, he mentioned that since the injection had to be made deep under the skin, he would prefer it to be made on his upper arm. Well, we respected the doctor’s decision and let him went ahead with it. We would have preferred the injection site to be at the thigh since it’s fleshier and Darius should experience less pain.
The doctor began to ‘numb’ the injection area on the arm by repeatedly tapping onto Darius’ skin with his fingers. Darius started to feel uncomfortable and was looking upset. We ain’t sure if that was because of the discomfort he was experiencing from the tapping or fear over the ‘strange’ sensation. We tried to calm him down but it didn’t seem to work.
When the injection was made, Darius let out a loud cry and tears began to flow down his eyes nonstop. He was even wailing much more badly than when he had the fall the previous night.
After the vaccination was done, I picked him up and tried soothing him by carrying him and walking around. It took me quite a while before he was finally calmed down again. Till now, we still don’t know if it was due to the pain he experienced on the arm that had caused him to wail so badly, or was it just the fear of something weird happening on him? ^^|
Anyway, we were glad that he had cleared his MMR vaccinations so that he won’t be needing to do it again when he is Primary 1. I personally have always dislike injections done onto myself so I guess Darius would be thanking us for not making him go through an extra jab when he’s older. ^^
