Remorseful…

Broken lower lip, bruised forehead, cut on nostril, bruise on cheeks, bruises on knees… All these injuries of Darius were caused by my negligence while we were out for an evening walk earlier.

Yes, I’m remorseful over my short but crucial loss of concentration while he was toddling down a slope near our house. When I had realised something was wrong, he was already down on all fours over the rather rough concrete ground and crying for my rescue.

Usually after he had fallen, Darius would pick himself up immediately. That’s why when he was still lying down onto the ground when I got to him, I knew the fall could be quite serious. So after I picked him up, I immediately checked his lips and indeed, they were bleeding; he had cut his lips with his teeth again during the fall, just like his bloodied fall last month (see A Bloodied Fall).

I panicked and quickly took out a piece of anti-bacterial wet wipe from my waist pouch to wipe off as much blood off him as possible. While I headed back towards home, I called Catherine on the mobile to ’standby’ for our return at home. Actually I did not know how that would help, but just wanted her to know of Darius’ accident as soon as possible.

When I was in the lift going up to our floor, a lady spotted the bloodied wipe in my hands and knew something had happened to my child. She didn’t say anything but appeared sympathic over Darius’s condition.

Reaching home, Catherine took over and carried Darius to the toilet, washing his lips and wiping them with a wet tissue. We then checked if any of his teeth were chipped or broken. Fortunately, all looked fine.

By the way, Darius had already stopped crying soon after I had picked him up from his fall. He didn’t seem to experience much pain despite all the wounds and bleeding, since he didn’t instinctively use his hands to touch his wounds nor show any painful expression. I’m still very much amazed by his high pain threshold, which admittedly, something I’m lack of.

When Catherine placed Darius down on the ground after wiping him clean, he quickly rushed for his books and grabbed one for me to read to him, ignoring the wounds he had just suffered. o_0|

Darius' wounds did not stop him from wanting to do his favourite activity

All in all, I’m glad that despite his multiple wounds, he is generally okay and there is no permanent injury on him. Otherwise, I will really feel very guilty towards him and be blaming myself for a long time. Even now, I’m still feeling remorseful over my negligence. I shall not let this oversight happen again.
