Development: 18months Dar

Posted Under (How He Has Grown) on Friday, 15 January 2010 at 10:40 pm

(Since I had been writing pretty often lately about him through updates, I decided not to continue with the format for the previous few posts. Partly also because I’m lazy to think back and write now on what overlaps and not, also it is rather tedious to update because he has developed so much in just one month! I’ll just update his monthly growth with pictures and short notes from now on.)

He loves to play catching with us on long pathways and would tell us his intentions to play by running and looking back like this. People often see a giggling toddler running fast and a parent(either me or Hubby)acting goofily. Think a monster with hands up around chest level, fingers moving like octopus and making sounds like, “roar…graar”. Sometimes, sounds are enough to make him run with loud giggles. All adult inhibitions have to be thrown aside. It happens anywhere, anytime as long as there’s a long passage, even along corridors heading to the restrooms in a mall.

To catch his attention in the middle of a run, the object must be a vehicle with four wheels or a human with two legs. He’s just so fascinated with it/them that he would stop and stare til it’s/they are gone. He likes to observe adults and other children a lot.

He likes to explore stuff and think about what would happen like a scientist. He took the twig on his own initiative and dropped it into the line of the drainage cover. Then, he noticed the holes, touching them with his fingers and tried poking the twig into it too. The narrow hole took him two tries before it went in. He plays with his toys this way too, more interested in looking at the undersides of cars to look at the wheels instead of building ramps and pushing them along, or take apart things such as plastic blocks attached together than build them up. Recently, he found it really amusing and laughs heartily whenever a tower topples or when his toys come apart.

When he’s not irritating with his crying for petty reasons, he can actually be cute, where you just want to pinch his chubby cheeks, kiss his soft skin and hug him often. Like, when he’s not irritating his Mama in the late morning by coming to her with an opened book, take Mama’s fingers with another hand to point to the page. “Go and play yourself! Stop asking me to read books like the umpteen times already! I need to do something now!!!” =.=” Then, after 5mins, some toy dumped on Mama’s lap again. Ignore. Another few mins, another book. Finally, Mama give a huge sigh. Turn off the comp and read books with him even though she had accompanied him in the early morning and had read the same book at least two times. Learning is fun, learning is good.. but sometimes…it can be a little too much.

FINALLY, 18months!!! Seemed like a huge step in milestones for every Mother. Notice the cut-off for immunisation, the earliest age to begin playschool, childcare is always 18months. After this month, it’s going to be months of language explosion (see article), understanding and also tantrums throwing when he realised that he is no longer a dependent but a person who has his own mind, own choices. He would be able to voice his unhappiness, but also able to say his happiness too. I hope he would always stay so cheerful. No major meltdowns.
