(This is a backdated post for 7th December 2009)
Today is Catherine’s 30th Birthday and after a long day out touring the island, we had planned to end the celebration at a nice, romantic place with a seafood dinner.
Unfortunately, by the time we reached our resort, it was already 8pm plus. Most restaurants would be closed at around 10pm so we didn’t really have much time left if we were to travel out of the resort to search for a good restaurant. That’s why even though we had passed by a seafood restaurant with romantic setup on our way back, we decided it would not be practical to make the trip all the way back there again.
It was quite a pity but thinking back, I believe we had made a right choice, since Darius must had been feeling tired and sleepy too.
So after we refreshed ourselves with nice, warm baths, we were ready to check out the resort’s restaurants for the dinner.
We checked out the beach restaurant by the, well, beach first. It had nice ambience but we were concerned that the lightings were too dim (would be difficult to take photos) and the place was quite crowded with other guests (Cat would feel embarrassed with so many eyes looking at us for the birthday celebration).
So instead, we headed to the resort’s main restaurant. It also had quite a nice ambience and there wasn’t much guests.
We ordered two sets of western dishes (chicken thigh) and a plate of fried rice for Darius.
It took quite a while before the food to arrive so meanwhile, we let Darius walk around in the restaurant since he was getting restless sitting on the high chair with nothing to eat. Meanwhile, I passed Catherine her birthday card which I had brought all the way to Langkawi and secretly hidden in my backpack squeezed for the whole day of sight-seeing. It was a little bent but still brought a smile to Catherine when she was surprised.
When the food finally arrived after 9pm, we took turns feeding Darius the fried rice so that we could enjoy our own meals. The dishes were pretty tasty and we enjoyed it; Darius didn’t complain about his fried rice either.
After we finished off our food, it was already getting late, past Darius’ sleeping time. I beckoned the waitress to serve the ‘birthday cake’ for Catherine — I had asked for a slice of cheese cake (that’s the only cake they were serving) with three candles on top. The waitresses gave their blessings to Catherine, though we had told them earlier not to sing the birthday song for her as Catherine didn’t like getting too much attention from the other guests.
With that, our birthday celebration started off with a birthday song from me while Darius sat in her arms, followed by some photo taking. Catherine then started making her birthday wish before blowing out the candles.
It was a simple celebration but a meaningful one. In fact, our entire Langkawi trip could be considered a grand celebration for her birthday. It was something different for her since she has been celebrating her birthday each year with her family, eating Mee Suah with egg and a birthday cake. This time it was just the three of us, happy and sweet.
