(This is a backdated post for 6th December 2009)
After Darius had awoken up from his nap, we prepared ourselves for the swimming pool and beach.
Making use of the resort’s shuttle service, we traveled to the lobby and walked down towards the swimming pools. Reaching the children’s pool, we walked Darius into the water.
He appeared to be frightened upon contact of the relatively cold water, which was understandable since it had been a long time since he entered a swimming pool. We then calmed him down by singing him some songs and letting only a little of his body submerging into the waters at a time.
Catherine changed to her swim wear and accompanied him in the pool. Darius then gradually became more accustomed to the waters and started having fun with splashing the waters using his hands.
However, Darius had this tendancy of wanting to drink the water from the pool and we had to stop him several times before he would drink them without us noticing. I did taste a little of the water and unlike those in the public swimming pools in Singapore, there wasn’t a Chlorine taste to it. Probably that’s why Darius thought it was just ordinary drinking water. Later on, we gave him his drinking bottle to drink water from it in case he was thirsty.
After staying there for some time, we went over to the main pool and put Darius in our mushroom-shaped float. We had bought it since a year back but had only used it once. Its appearance was a little exaggerating so we did feel a little embarrassed using it. Still, since we had already brought it along and this was a resort after all, we proceeded to let Darius float around with it.
Darius was uneasy while in the float, wanting to crawl out of it by leaning forward. We had to hold onto him so that the float would not topple over. It was only after moving him around on the float with our assistance for a while that he started to relax.
There was a mini-waterfall at the pool and we tried moving him close to it and see if he liked it. Unfortunately, he didn’t enjoy the sensation of water splashing down from above his head.
As the sun began to set, we decided to go down to the beach.
With Darius still in his full body suit, we guided him onto the patch of wet sand where the waters had started to subside due to the emerging low tide. The last time he came so close to the sea was at East Coast Park on his 1st Birthday (see Darius’ Birthday Treats (Part 2)).
We were glad that he didn’t really seem to mind walking on the sand, probably because he loves walking so much that it didn’t really matter what surface he was on. Although we had wanted to let him play with the sand using the toy beach tools we brought, we decided to do that another time. So in the end, we just settled for a good walk by the beach and enjoyed the scenic view of the beach at sunset.
We then returned to our room for washing up and prepared ourselves for our dinner.
Back to the lobby, we chose to have our dinner at the Oriental Pearl Chinese Restaurant. Its set menus start from RM48 per person and we thought it was reasonably priced, since each menu consisted of a minimum of seven dishes.
We were given the choice of outdoor and indoor seats, and we decided to sit inside the air-conditioned restaurant for comfort. Although the outdoor seats were more romantic, there might be risks of getting mosquito bites. ^^|
After making our orders, Darius kept himself busy by fiddling with a pair of chopsticks while we waited. He seemed to be in a pretty good mood as he had been throughout this trip.
The dishes took a while to arrive but when it did, we were pleased with the spread of food. The fried rice and sweet and sour fish were especially nice, though there was a little of that ‘frozen chicken’ taste for the chicken dish. We were relieved to see that Darius was enjoying his meal too.
Darius only started to get restless after we had finished our meal and having our desserts. We allowed him to run around the restaurant as long as he was not making a fuss. Since the restaurant was quite void of other diners then, there was not much concern of him ‘harassing’ other guests. The staff was alright with Darius wandering around too.
With our stomachs filled, we took a stroll under the darkened skies by the pool area, before heading back to the lobby.
After we returned to our room and bathed Darius, we let him move around on the bed while we were settling down ourselves. We were used to him being on the bed at home so we thought he should be pretty safe there too.
Unfortunately, while I was in the restroom, I heard a loud thud followed by Catherine calling for me. I immediately rushed out and saw Darius lying on the ground with him facing down. Catherine had witnessed him slipping off the edge of the bed and landed onto the floor with his head first, like a rocket. She had tried to grab him before he fell but was just a moment too late.
We noticed a cut and bump on his forehead as he cried out loud after we picked him up.
Though he stopped crying after we coaxed him, we were still very worried if any serious head damage had already been done, since he went down from the bed with his head hitting the ground first. Fortunately till this date, he had been behaving normally so there shouldn’t be any complication from the fall.
Since this incident, we have been very careful whenever he is on the bed, making sure we watch him attentively to ensure he is safe.

Hi,
Darious looks very good in his new swim wear. May I know where you bought it? What is the size you got for Darious? How much is it?
Did you let Darious try taking cold-water shower at home before you brought him to the swimming pool? I’ve always wanted to let my boy go to the swimming pool, but am afraid that he can’t get used to the cold water and may get a cold.
For the mushroom-shaped float, are you able to exhaust the air out of it after you finished using it? How do you do it? I have a float for my son. But after my hubby tried to blow in some air, we were not able to let the air go out. So we’re a bit reluctant to bring it along with us since it’ll be very bulky.
Thank you.
Hi Jiaying,
Thanks for your compliments. ^^
We bought the swimwear from Kiddy Palace. Size 2 for the top and bottom. Adds up to around SGD60.
We didn’t bath Darius with cold water, but we let him play with buckets of water while bathing, so that he can get in contact with cold water while playing. For him, he does feel uncomfortable when contacting cold water in the pool, so we usually let him stay at the shallow parts first so that only his legs are in the water. When he’s more used to the temperature, we then gradually introduced more parts of his body into the pool. Another way of assimilating him to cold water might be to bring him to those water splash parks (e.g. IMM, Sembawang Shopping Mall) and let him play in them.
That said, he was terrified of the powerful shower head splashing on his head and being in deep water of the pool.
Yes, the mushroom float could be deflated. We couldn’t inflat it fast enough though and needed help from the beach staff using their air pump.
I believe floats nowadays come with the design that air will not be let out automatically unless you pinch down hard on the air outlet area. If you look carefully at that portion, there’s a small slit which will only open up when you pinch on its sides.
Hope these help. Anyway our son’s name is Darius. ^^
Hi,
Oops, sorry for getting your son’s name wrongly.
Thank you so much for the sharing. Look forward to more updates of your blog to get more tips.
No worries Jiaying. ^^
Thanks for reading too; hopefully the posts are not getting too lengthy (recording for self-reading in the future too).
I think the mushroom float is cute, not exaggerating ahaha.
Brownie,
Ya it’s quite unique but blowing it up and carrying it around can be quite troublesome. We would now prefer a simpler float for Darius… ^^
