What Is Tot School, see post “‘Tot School’

This is what we have done for 15 months – Lesson 6 Wk 1
Date: 26 Oct 09 – 1st Nov 09

20091026_TotSchoolLesson6wk1

This week I decide to stall some learning games with him and just storytime of 1 or 2 books with him to take a break. I realised I keep forgetting to do the nursery rhymes or children songs from the curriculum or just didn’t find time to do it as I had to deal with his potty training stuff.

Some progression:

- Is able to understand that things have a place they belong and will try to move the shapes to fit into the Playskool shaper sorter on his own.Previously, he just take up the shape, examine it and throw it just on top or on the floor. After getting a shape into the hole with my help, he will peer at the shape through the holes for a while, trying to find where it has gone to.

- He can sort the blue and green colour pom-poms into the blue and green stacking bowls with at most 2 mistakes out of 8 balls now. Sometimes, the mistakes seemed to be on purpose, just to be defiant a little.

- He started to take up the xylophone stick by the correct end and hit on the xylophone by himself.

- Bible Story

20090810_TheRhymeBibleStoryDaniel Prays & Who Saw Jesus? from ‘The Rhyme Bible Book for Toddler’.
An Excerpt:

Daniel prayed in the morning,
and Daniel prayed at night.
Daniel prayed when he ate his lunch,
For he knew that this was right.

Then some men
Said a terrible thing;
“Don’t pray to God—-
Pray to the KING!”

I put his hands in prayer form when I read each word, “prayed”.

Learning Toys / Motor Skills

15mthsWk3-1

He’s into transporting heavy stuff this week, like a bag of small toys, clothing, bigger toys. He held the toy train by the phone and walked from one room to the living room, babbling to himself. He also carried a bag of alphabet letters from one place to another. He especially like to grab hold of our clothes or his training pants if he see them lying around and move them from one place to another.

15mthsWk3-2

I finally let him played the old organ which belonged to me (got it when I was 11 years old, had been at my mother’s house for a long time til it was moved over to our house when Dar was 2 months old). I hadn’t touched it for a long time because it was a little spoilt in some places. But still playable for a while. We were both amazed that he could move a few fingers over the black and white keys very flexibly and moving on both hands too as if he knows how to play (this was his first time). He did not slammed his hands down on it anyhow but just kept playing with his fingers. And for some unknown reason, he just kept giggling when he played, thinking it was funny.

15mthsWk3-3

The only home-made learning toy for this week. Originally was to poke holes for the cover of the Pringles can and then slot in the pipe-cleaners. (see ‘here‘) But I hadn’t found a good way to do it. It might also be too advanced. So decide to try this method first- Got him to put 10 long thin pipe cleaners into the open can one by one. I’m surprised it’s actually not easy and needed him to use a lot of fine manipulation. Maybe it was too long since I did not cut it. Nevertheless, a good workout for his fingers. The funny thing was he would slot and the pipe cleaner would go outside the can because he thought he ‘saw’ the inside. So this helps to improve his hand-eye coordination too. Every time we play this, he kept wanting to ‘run away’ after the first few were done and I had to make him stay to finish all ten. Also had to hold the can for him because he would tip the can over.

15mthsWk3-4
He discovered by accident that the IKEA toy holder basket can be pressed down and if let go, the bottom will automatically come back up again. So he kept doing this for 5-10mins, pressing down, releasing, pressing down, releasing. He was so fascinated that it can come back up.

15mthsWk3-5

Playing with the new LeapFrog magnetic word builder toy we got him which is stuck onto the fridge. He’s able to slot in the magnetic letters sometimes (most of the time need me to help him turn the pieces) after one had been taken out. (details will be in another post).

Outdoor For Tot

15mthsWk3-nature1

He's starting to look up at things above him and this week, these yellow pipes caught his interest. He will stop and stare at them and walk looking up to follow their winding paths along the ceiling.

Exercise

15mthsWk3-exer2

He took the initiative to walk down the stairs using the railing which surprised me.

15mthsWk3-exer1

I let him step on climbing steps at another playground and he could hold onto the bars firmly too standing straight.

TV Time

Watched the DVD animation-chinese version of the chinese storybook (我想飞 & 火车要开了)from Dolphin media. Also watching the LeapFrog Letter Factory.

15mthsWk3-tv

Drinking orange juice + honey drink on his favourite piyo piyo chair while watching. Glad he likes that chair or else he would walk to the TV and stand in front of it.

Fav Pic of the Week

15mthsWk3-fav

With his two front teeth showing more, he's developing a cute smile. One that both of us just can't help smiling back and exclaiming.
