Darius’ Snippets #2

Posted Under (Darius 13-15mths) on Thursday, 1 October 2009 at 6:20 pm

I had been trying to update this snippets thingy of interesting things he did since 14mths that isn’t enough for a whole post and might be too much for the 15month post update. Now finally manage to write it out before I forget them all.

Dangerous cables had since been removed, box and all since he became an expert in opening the box himself and take them out.

Dangerous cables had since been removed, box and all since he became an expert in opening the box himself and take them out.

At 14.5months, Darius is knowing more and more. That’s a lot of interesting things he suddenly did this month. He also seemed to understand things we are trying to do or even some of our speech now. He also tries to copy them if he feels able.

Understanding
-He used to wander off along the corridor when I opened the door. After teaching him a few times that he must stay beside me while I locked the door, he nows stand obediently beside me while I locked the door and gate and only start walking when I say, “Let’s go”. Then, he’ll just wait at the lift with me and walk in the moment the door opens.

-While walking yesterday, he was walking slightly in front when I said,
“Darius, he shui (drink water)”. He immediately stopped and turned towards me as I put the straw bottle to his mouth to drink. (He is always charging in front and never stops when I call him) I was surprised. Maybe I’ll test him again to see if he really understands ‘drink water’.

-During our walk, when he wanders off, he will obey and walk towards me when I call him to ‘come’. If he doesn’t, he will get a scolding. ^^ and he’ll remember again next time. Sometimes though, he will ignore my call when he’s really focused on his destination.

-One thing I’m glad for, He will obey when I say, “Eeh! Don’t touch”, sometimes, justEeh!“. He will stop his hands or drop whatever objects in his hands immediately and go for other things. If we take away objects from him, he will protest sometimes but it would only be a little cry and no more.

-He surprised me yesterday when he actually walked over some distance and gave a ball to my mother when she put out her hands and say, “give”. He always ignored me when I did that. Would need to work on that more now.

-He automatically put up his hands when we take off his clothes and tries to move his hand to put into the sleeves/take up his legs to put into the shorts, when we put on his clothes.

-After our walk or coming back from outside, he would immediately walk to the bathroom in our masterbedroom (crossing the living room), cross over the hurdle and stand inside the shower area, waiting for me to take off his clothes to bathe him. (He used to go over to the playmat to play his activity table or mirror to look at himself.) I think he also understands, “冲凉”, cos he’ll prepare to go there too when I say this in the morning.

-He knows that I have to put on his shoes for him before he can go out so he’ll come towards us when we tell him to wear shoes, and turn around to sit on our laps. He will touch his shoes sometimes if his daddy came back from work, probably thinking to go out.

- Today, I told him after his bath, that 我们去看书 (Let’s go and read books),” (in the study room) and he immediately walked towards it, giving me a huge surprise. Usually, I’ll need to drag him from whatever he was doing. Hmm, did he really understand?

- These two days, he did not throw any books on the floor anymore after I ‘discipline’ him by making him put them back onto the shelf, one by one. Strangely, he doesn’t take any books to read from the bookshelf anymore either. Maybe he thought it’s a forbidden zone now. :(

- So now he takes the books from the study room’s green table instead, with ‘The rhyme bible storybook’ as top favourite. He loves flipping through the soft pages. Surprisingly, he hated that book when I first bought it and refused to look at it much. Today, he even protested angrily when I took away the book from him and asked him to play some learning toys because he had already read it.

- My repeated attempts to handsign, “All Done” to him has finally seen results. He can signal ‘All Done’ to me with his hands when he’s done with his pooping. He has done it many times now. When I ask him after he has been sitting for sometime, “Anymore?”. He will look up at me and flap his hands up and down. I will pick him up from the seat then. He also does this when he’s done with ‘eating’ which I always show to him after we finished eating. Most of the time, I would respect him and stop but when he only ate a few mouthfuls and is just being fussy, I will ignore the sign.

Behaviour
-In the lift, he’ll stamp his feet, preparing to ‘charge’ out of the lift. Then, the moment the lift door opens, he’ll walk very fast out knowing where he wants to go. My attempt to grab hold of his hands results in my hands get flung away very roughly. When I hold his hands to guide him away from dangerous places or intended places, he’ll pull and pull to resist. Now I just let him walk while I guide him by touching his head, nudge his head a little or ‘herd’ him by walking beside him so he can’t walk away from the place we are intending to go.

- He has learnt to tiptoe to get what he wants from a higher place and he loves to touch the mouse of my computer or sit on our laps when we use the comp.

-He got angry and yelled everytime he pushed the trolley or stool and  they got stuck somewhere. He will still hold onto it and try to push with all his might. Very comical and made us laugh.
-Then he got smarter and actually learnt how to lift up the trolley to change direction.

-He’s still afraid of knocking anything over and when the stool he’s trying to push topple a little in his hands, he will cry for help for me to help to move it back into place. It’s so funny to see him holding onto the object desperately instead of just letting it go. Recently, he almost toppled a metal stand at toy r us and held onto it too, crying for help.

-He started stamping his feet to follow me since I always do that to play with him (pretending to run away very fast).

-When he’s upset or angry, he’ll launch into a strings of sounds he knows, ‘words’, babbles as if trying to complain or talk about something (e.g. like ba bao, bow wow wow geesh geesh, ba ma meh eee eee! eee! eee!). It’s not just ‘waah wahh’ all the time now. Especially when he falls down/got pushed or hurt accidentally by us, he will keep ‘scolding’ and complaining. Haa.

-When he urinates on himself, he will immediately cry and try to ‘explain’ himself with all sorts of sounds and words…to prevent mama from scolding him.

Speech
- He saysBow Wow Wow” quite often. It’s from the Sandra Boynton’s book of ‘Moo, Baa, Lalala”. Both of us like to read this to him often, so when he said this, I associated the story with it cos I never taught him to say it.
Today, he was viewing the DVD animation of the chinese story. There was a dog in it and he actually said, “Bow wow wow!” when he had been quietly watching. Unless my ears heard it wrongly. Will need to confirm again that he understands that dog makes the sound ‘bow wow wow’.

- He always laugh when we say the story of Mr Brown. He just immediately chuckles when we starts saying, “He can sound like a cow, he can go, Moo Moo“.

- I suddenly heard him say, “干吗?” very softly and frustratedly when we were playing learning toys and he was feeling frustrated with me for taking away the storybook on the table. Er… I had been saying that to him always very frustratedly when he cries and I don’t understand why he cries. O_o was it a fluke?

- I also heard once, “我要” cos I had been saying to him, “你要什么?Darius say, 我要。。。 (ssh, mummum, etc)”
