Alright, one night has passed after we switched to a new bed for Darius (see Darius’ New Bed).
So how did it go? I have to say that things have been encouraging so far. ^^
At around 9.30pm last night, his usual sleeping time, I patted him to sleep and it didn’t take long before he dozed off. I’m glad he didn’t fuss much on his new bed, perhaps now that he’s now sleeping on a more comfortable place than before. On our side, it’s also easier for us to pat him now, as we no longer had to stretch out our arms over the cot in order to pat him.
It was all peaceful and quiet until some time past midnight, when we heard to soft ‘thump’ sound coming from the baby monitor. I quickly went in to see that he had fallen off the mattress and ended up sitting beside it. Fortunately I’ve placed some soft alphabet mat beside it earlier so the fall was very much cushioned. In fact, he was still deep in sleep after the fall. ^^|
Taking this opportunity anyway, I brought him to the toilet for him to ease himself before putting him back to sleep.
For the rest of the night, all’s well and Catherine and I had a good, uninterrupted sleep (yeah!).
It was at around 6am this morning that I heard another soft ‘thump’ and I went over to Darius to see he had fallen off the bed again. Like before, he was still sound asleep while lying down on the alphabet mat. I carried him back onto his bed and Catherine patted him back to sleep while still lying on her bed. (easier now with no playpen fence to hinder).
At about 8.30am, he woke us up with his movements and sounds (soft ones). Usually, he wakes up at around 7am for his morning millk feed, so we were quite surprised he managed to sleep till quite late today. Hopefully it’s because he had a comfortable bed to sleep on, and not because he didn’t sleep well in the night due to his falls. ^^|
Right now, he is taking his morning nap on the new bed, and he’s napping fine so far. We are glad he has not been resistant to the change of his bed. I’m thinking he’s even happier with his new bed, now that he has more space to turn and move around. Also, he doesn’t fuss much after he wakes up when we are still sleeping; he will just sit on his bed quietly and play with his pillow, bolsters or soft toy. He used to make a lot of noises when he was in the cot.
Regarding safety issues, we still need to teach him how to get off the mattress safely. As for the bed railing, we are not sure if we will need to get one now to prevent him from falling off the bed while sleeping. However, as the mattress is 8 inch thick (needed to cover up the empty space below our bed), I’m not sure if we will be able to get a railing this high.

good luck on the bed railing!
Thanks Angeline! Though we are not sure if we will be getting one still.
