Darius’ New Bed

After our unsuccessful hunt for a new bed for Darius at IKEA (see Another Trip to IKEA Tampines), Catherine and I continued to consider other alternatives, including buying second-hand bed frames from online sellers.

In the end, after much consideration, we decided to only get a Single Size mattress for him instead, without any bedframe. As Darius will be closer to the ground, he will be safer sleeping on it and we won’t need to do extra child-proofing measures like putting a barrier (anyway, wouldn’t mounting a barrier allows the child to climb even higher, and thus possibily falling down from a higher place?). Also, he will have the liberty to choose a bedframe he likes when he grows up. ^^

With the decision made, we started our search for a good and reasonably priced mattress. On last Friday, I came across an advertisement on The New Paper by King Furnishing (Address: 55 Jalan Pemimpin, Singapore 577211, Tel: 6258 5933), which was having clearance sale for their mattresses. Having been there once before when we were shopping for Darius’ wardrobe (he wasn’t born yet then), we felt it might be a suitable place to get what we needed.

As the place is inaccessible via public transport, I rented a car and drove ourselves there. Being a weekday, the place was deserted and there were only like 2 or 3 other customers around. No wonder they needed to come up with a sale to boost up their business.

The staff there weren’t enthuastic about our arrival anyway, busy eating their packeted dinner on the first storey, right in front of the main entrance. As the mattresses were on the second and third storeys, we were told to go browse them ourselves first and one of them would join us later. -_-|

When we reached the second storey using the lift, we stepped into a huge showroom with wardrobes and beds and we were the only people there. Darius, seeing his opportunity for barrier-free exploration, quickly dashed off and walked excitedly around the place. We let him wander since the place seemed quite safe and there wasn’t anybody else anyway.

Only after some time later that a male salesperson came over to ask what we were looking for. He didn’t seem friendly initially, and beckoned us to the third storey after knowing our interests were on advertised aale.

On the third storey, all the furniture placed there were beds and mattresses, with many mattresses of the same brand/model stacked upon one another. This went to show how much ready stock they had to clear.

As we browsed through the different mattresses, we decided that we should not settle for an inferior but cheaper mattress, since we wanted the mattress to last at least 5 years for Darius. Taking into our account of our preferences and budget, the salesperson recommended a few brands to us and in the end, we settled for one which was slighly above our budget, but was of our expectations. It would be worth the investment, we thought.

As they didn’t have stocks for this mattress (according to him, due to ‘high demand’), they could only deliver one week later, which was today.

Fast forward to today, the mattress arrived on time this morning.

After removing Darius’ cot from the bedroom and cleaning up the area, we moved the mattress in, put on the mattress protectors and absorbent pad (‘Saddle-style Waterproof mattress protector’from Bumwear), before we covered it up with a mattress cover:

So far Darius had taken one nap in the day on the mattress, which was fuss-free and he managed to sleep on it for quite long. Hopefully this is a good sign for his subsequent sleep.

Okay, it’s time to bring him to the bedroom for his night sleep on his new bed now. Praying hard that things will turn out well tonight! ^^
