All About Darius at 14months old!

He is standing at 81cm and still weighs 10kg.

Motor Skills

☺He walks very fast now (as fast as us with a lot of quick little steps) but often still puts his hands up beside him in a surrender pose, resulting in people thinking that he’s only just learning to walk.
☺He can walk both up and down the stairs putting his hands on the railings or walls now. (see ‘Getting Up the Stairs‘)
☺Previously, he could only squat from standing. Now he can squat up from the sitting position, thus stand up by himself from any area unaided.
☺He likes to push my ikea stool around and is learning to hold onto the string of a pull toy to pull towards himself.
☺He has mastered tiptoeing and arms stretching to get things higher than him. No tabletop or shelf is safe from him now!
☺He knows how to hold onto the shapes of the shape sorter to attempt to put them in but still can’t find the exact hole to slot and needs help.
☺He self-feeds with a small spoon by putting it into his mouth but needs my help to put the food into the spoon as he can’t scoop.
☺He can drink from a cup now holding it with two hands by himself without spilling.
☺Just yesterday, he succeeded in putting on a fridge magnet by himself, take it off and put on again. (had introduced magnets and taught him for sometime)

☺Today, he finally discovered the kitchen cabinet handles and opened /closed the cabinets using only fingers from one hand. No cabinet is safe now!
☺He is able to put things into a container and take them out. (see ‘Housechore Training‘)
☺He can finally open up his hands to give a good clap but only when we hold them and do the clapping action for him.
☺He can throw a ball underhand and overhand and enjoys throwing or dropping things, observing them when they fall.

Likes/Dislikes

♥ Darius loves playing tag with us. He actually initiates this game by laughing and walking fast away from us, for us to catch him.
♥ His favourite activity most of the time, is flipping through books and doing ‘self-reading’. He was flipping board books but now getting adept at flipping soft pages too without spoiling them.
♥ He likes to pick up any object he fancies at that particular moment and walk around the house with it. If it is something new, he will also hold onto it for a long time.
♥ He likes to open and close covers. (e.g. boxes. ricola sweets box)
♥ He loves pressing buttons and often stop the playing of music on my Hi-Fi or change it to other functions. Frustrating as it meant I had to keep going to it to play the music for him.
♥ He enjoys me tickling him and gets excited, almost hysterical when we play peek-a-boo with him.
♥ He hug us spontaneously all the time and enjoys physical contact with people. (likes to touch other people’s face, mouth or place his mouth on their necks)
☻He is still clingy to me and wants hugs very often in the day.
☻He whines when something of interest is taken away from him but quietens down quickly. No possessiveness yet.

Speech

♫ He said, “Aiii niiii” one day very continuously. (see ‘Snippet #1‘)
♫ He said, “Por Por Por” once, so he could make the ‘p’ sound beside the ‘b’ sound.
♫ He goes ‘AHHH! AHHH!” loudly with me when I read a familiar story and sing a song he likes.
♫ A few days ago, he started saying, “Aye aye” because I asked him to say ‘A, B, C’. I’m guessing he’s trying to say “A”.
♫ He understands when to put up his hands or hold out his legs for me to dress/undress him.
♫ He understands he has to go to the bathroom in the master bedroom immediately after our walk for me to undress him for bathing or wash hands.
♫ He copies my speech immediately only if it’s something he is already pronouncing, otherwise he just goes ‘Ahhh Ahhh” or look away from me when I asked him to say something new.
♫ He still cannot say, “Hi or Bye” and do the accompanying hand actions.
♫ He laughs very heartily, with clear “Ha ha ha” (see ‘Darius’ New Laughs’) and will laugh together if someone laughs (even if it’s by just a stranger on the street).
♫ These few days, he keeps pursing his lips and goes “hmmm hmmm” high-pitched, with force, like a car racing.

Baby Care

◙ He still only has two front lower teeth.
◙ As a result, he is still eating porridge that is cooked soft, oatmeal or mashed food. Eating certain textured food takes him a long time.
◙ For EC, in the past month he has been having misses and always cries only after he misses instead of before. Even naps are not ‘safe’ now as he often wakes up soaked, or calls me only after standing around in the playpen and peeed. So I have no choice but to put him in training pants or cloth diapers even for naps. Hope he’ll get back his communication with me again.
◙ He still needs to be patted to sleep even for night time now because he keeps getting up to walk around in his playpen, or play with the radio. These few days, we are trying to make him sleep on his own by giving him the pacifier and go out of the room without patting. He cried a few times but still ended up falling asleep on his own. Hope we’ll succeed in getting him to sleep by himself without patting.
