We have been practicing Night-Time Elimination Communication (EC) since Darius was 7 months old. One of the ‘side-effects’ is that he would wake up once or more almost every night when he has the urge to pee. We will have to then carry him to the bathroom for him to eliminate himself. We are targeting to have him sleep through the night without needing to pee but so far we have yet to be successful.
He will indicate his desire to pee by first stirring his body, followed by making some noises. If we do not respond to him after that, he will start to whine or cry to get our attention.
We are able to respond to his signals early and bring him to the bathroom before he wets himself if we are also sleeping in the bedroom at that time. However, for cases when he signals while we are still outside in the study or living room, we might not be able to hear of his signs and respond to him in time.
Usually, we will only hear him through the thick bedroom door after he has started crying. After eliminating himself, he will go back to sleep promptly most of the time. However at some other times, he might have difficulty getting back to sleep, probably due to the distress caused by his own whining/crying.
This is why we had recently decided to get ourselves a baby monitor (though he’s already a toddler) so that we will be able to detect and respond to his elimination signs as soon as possible.
Also, during nap times recently, Darius tends to wake up ‘quietly’, sitting or cruising in his cot without informing us that he has already woke up (e.g. by making noises). It’s usually after he has wet himself that he will start crying to attract our attention. By then, the ‘damage’ has already been done. Having a baby monitor for his naps will thus be very helpful.
We bought the Chicco Baby Monitor from Metro last evening (they are having store-wide 20% discount). After using it for a night, this new addition has proved to be very effective and useful, enabling us to monitor any noise coming from our master bedroom (which is air-conditioned and has its door shut) while we were in the study or living room doing our stuffs.
On another note, I couldn’t help but felt a little strange, while I was coaxing Darius to sleep by patting and singing to him inside the room, as I knew Catherine could be ‘eavesdropping’ on us via the baby monitor. ^^|
