Going Up and Down

Darius now has this strong liking for steps, stairways and slopes. He will almost always rush towards them after spotting one and will be eager to move up and down the obstacle.

For example at our flat’s void deck, he will always head towards the stairways there and will try to climb down the stairs (with our help, since he can’t get down himself without falling yet). When he reaches the bottom, he will then turn around and attempt to climb up the stairs himself. This cycle can keep on going and he doesn’t seem to get bored from doing so. Sometimes we will have to carry him away while distracting him so that we can get him to play at the other areas.

Just last Sunday at my parents-in-law’s house, Darius moved towards the stairs in their maisonette and started getting up them all by themself, using the crawling method. This was the first time he was attempting so many steps at one time (about ten of them) without resting and we were quite surprised and impressed with his endurance and his determination to reach the top. ^^|

Kids sometimes love to do things they enjoy over and over again without getting bored (e.g. see Merry-Go-Round). It’s often quite funny to watch them go at it as long as their actions are not causing a disturbance to others or resulting in a big mess.

One recent example for Darius was when we were at the roof terrace of the Esplanade last weekend, where he spotted a slope nearby. Immediately he headed towards it and started his up-and-down cycle:

It’s interesting to watch him go at it while we sat down and took a rest. This is a good walking exercise which is beneficial to his balancing skills too. ^^
