The last time we brought Darius to a hairdresser, he was only 4 months old (see Darius Shaved) and he ended up as a botak (malay for bald). We had wanted him to be completely shaved since his birth hair was fast dropping and the shave should help boost new hair growth.
So after a gap of 9 months, we brought him to a saloon again on Saturday. Catherine has been periodically trimming his hair at home but she had suggested having his hair trimmed by a hairdresser for a nicer haircut.
When we reached the place, I mentioned to the hairdresser that a slight trim would do, as I’m worried he might ended up looking bare on the top since Darius didn’t really have thick hair to start with. ^^|
With everything ready, the hairdresser took out her tools and attempted to begin her task. However, she couldn’t successfully get her first cut after several attempts.
Darius couldn’t sit still, and would abruptly turn his head when he felt (or saw from the mirror) the hairdresser’s hands/scissors coming close, probably due to fear from knowing someone was trying to do something on him.
We tried to distract him by talking to him but it wasn’t effective. In the end, I decided to squat down in front of him and started singing him songs while holding his neck and head firmly to prevent any sudden movements from him, which could prove dangerous since sharp objects were involved.
I think I sang close to ten songs before the haircut was finally complete, and I’m glad I had mustered up the courage to sing to Darius in a public place, though fortunately there wasn’t other customers besides us then. On the other hand, the other hairdressers were watching us throughout since they got no other customers to serve. ^^|
Phew! That wasn’t exactly a smooth-going haircut but still we were glad to have his haircut completed without having to spend bigger bucks or travel far to some specialised kids’ saloons (anyway, we only paid S$5 for the haircut).
Here’s how Darius looks like now with his new haircut, though I must admit the difference is subtle from the photos. Probably when his hair starts to grow longer will we be able to see the differences. ^^

Hi Chikoo’s Mom,
Yes I think as they grow older, it will be getting harder for us to make them do things as easily as before, like haircuts, staying still for photos, vaccinations etc. ^^|
