Darius’ Birthday Treats (Part 2)

(continued from Part 1)

After Darius had woken up from his nap, we proceeded with our next plan for the day — Cycling.

I rented a mountain bike with a child seat mounted at the front for S$8/hr,while Catherine got herself another mountain bike for S$6/hr. With their ‘one hour rental + one hour free’ promotion, it means we were given two hours of rental for this same amount.

We had purposely chosen this bike with the child seat in front instead of at the back. First, we felt it’s safer and reassuring for Darius to be visible to me when I’m cycling since I will be able to know immediately if anything was amiss (e.g. safely belt loosened, Darius falling asleep etc). Moreover, it’s easier for me to cycle with his weight in front of me instead of at the back.

Hope Darius had felt safe cycling with me~ ^^

Another important reason was also not to block Darius’ view, since one of the biggest reason why we wanted to cycle with him was to let him look at his surroundings while feeling the wind blowing at him as we cycled.

It was a fun cycling journey and we stopped when we came by a beautiful lake. We had fun taking photos and seeing Darius happily walking around.

Our happy Darius on the run!

As we cycled on, we passed by the Seafood Centre, the 360-degree skiing lagoon, passed by the hawker centre before we stopped at the Sand Castle Beach that is just next to the hawker centre. Catherine had wanted to visit this place but we didn’t know where exactly it was. We were lucky to have passed by it by chance, since we were already planning to head back to the rental shop.

We took this opportunity to let Darius walk on sand the first time in his life. He didn’t seem to be very comfortable walking on it though, probably due to the bumpy and softer surfaces.

Little Green Riding Hood

We then brought Darius towards the sea. As he neared the waters however, he started feeling afraid and kept clinging on to me while stealing looks towards the sea. Perhaps he could feel the dangers associated with being swept into the ocean by the waves? We had planned to let his feet feel the waters but we ended up not doing so, since it would likely only aggrevate his fear. ^^|

"Don't abandon me here!"

We then started to cycle back to the rental shop.

Halfway through, we decided to stop and rest at one of the empty BBQ pits for a while before continuing. An orange cat (Catherine commented that it looked identical to the cat appearing in one of Darius’ picture books) started to approach us, begging us for food with her meow-ing. We did give her one of Darius’ star-shaped biscuits but she didn’t seem interested. After knowing we didn’t have any suitable food to offer her, she left promptly. ^^|

"Hmph! Another wasted attempt."

After we returned the bicycles at the rental shop, we prepared to head for home.

But before that, we still had one last plan made for Darius — Shopping! We had wanted to buy some clothes and a pair of new shoes for him as his birthday gifts from us.

When we reached Kiddy Palace back at Causeway Point, Darius was still very energetic despite the long day and simply couldn’t stop walking around (with me watching him closely for safety), seemingly doing his own shopping. ^^

We were unable to find any suitable clothings for him so in the end, we had only bought him a new pair of shoes. The shoe size we bought for him was 14 (cm) and when we checked a shoe size chart on one of the shelves, we were surprised to see that it stated that on average, a Size 14 shoes was actually meant for a 3 to 4 year old kid! Seeing this, we were not sure whether Darius has big feet or the chart was inaccurate… ^^|

A new pair of shoes = A New Beginning?

At the end of the day, both Catherine and I were completely exhausted but glad that Darius had fun the whole day with us. Hopefully he was satisfied with the birthday treats we had planned for him. ^^
