Phew! What a tiring but fulfilling day it has been!
Although Darius’ 1st birthday will only fall on this coming Wednesday, Catherine and I had decided to celebrate it with our families today instead, being a Sunday.
Time really flies and our little bundle of joy had already been in our lives for a whole year. Before we know it, he could be in an university or probably doing a course from http://www.elearners.com/. Hopefully we will still be able to celebrate each and every of his birthday as a family before then.
Having worked till late last night, both of us overslept this morning, rushing to finish up on whatever needed to be done before our first guests arrived. For me, I had to travel several bus stops away to collect the birthday cake we have ordered last Tuesday (see 1st Birthday Cake for Darius Ordered).
The cake matched our instructions and design, except that the ‘rainbow portion’ at the lower half of the cake didn’t turn out as vibrant and colourful as the one shown in their catalogue. I feedback to the staff on this but expected that they could do nothing much about it anyway.
Reaching home with the big box containing the 2kg cake, I proceeded to make some final touches on the decorations. The doorbell rang soon after and the delivery staff from Neo Garden had arrived. We had ordered a 10 pax mini-buffet which comprised of a 9-course meal setup. All the dishes were stored in disposable containers. I was surprised that they had even included a soup scoop and metal pincers, besides a trash bag, disposable table cloth and cutleries.
Soon, our guests began to arrive and we started busying ourselves entertaining them. They were pleasantly surprised that we had prepared a play area for their children (see Final Preparations for Darius’ 1st Birthday Party). Later on throughout the party, we were glad to have made an effort to set up such a corner as all the kids were having fun. ^^
The adults were themselves entertained too, either socialising among themselves, watching the kids play, filling up their stomachs with the delicious mini-buffet, flipping through Darius’ photobook (see Darius’ photobook review) or watching the television.
More importantly, as Darius was walking around non-stop throughout the party, our guests were also having fun watching and playing with him. I was jokingly commenting that he was being a dutiful host by walking around to check if everyone were having a good time at his party. ^^|
After some time, we felt it was time to show his video/photo montage, since most of our guests were done with their food.
Though some of them were unable to focus through the 15-minute montage, we were still glad to have shared our lives with Darius throughout his first year. We had purposely planned to show his montage before the cake-cutting session so that the guests could relate more to his growth when singing the birthday songs for him.
We sang both the english and chinese versions of the birthday songs before blowing out the candles and cutting the cake. It sure was a heartwarming moment to see our families coming together and celebrating Darius’ birthday as one. ^^
Anyway, the cake tasted nice and with the ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY’ candles stealing the limelight (see Candles, Photoshoot, Slideshow), the imperfect rainbow on the cake didn’t bother us anymore. ^^|
Even after the cake-cutting session, our families continued to stay on. We felt the play area had played a crucial role in this — with the kids kept entertained and fuss-free, their parents would not feel pressurized to have to head for home early.
After they have left, we started opening the birthday presents for Darius:
All in all, we had a really wonderful and satisfying party in our cosy setting, and we were glad everything had turned out as we had planned. All the hardwork for today was worth it! ^^

Happy Birthdy to you Darius!
Thanks Sunflower! ^^
That’s a nice cake. Did Darius get to taste the cake too? I love the candles, did the wax drip to the cake?
Thanks Brownie. We feel the cake is valued for money.
Darius didn’t get to taste the cake as we thought it might be too sweet for him. But come to think of it, we should let him taste a little since it’s his birthday cake afterall (first one somemore). Will let him try a small portion tonight (we kept the remainders in the fridge). ^^
Yes some wax did drip onto the cake but they were easy to remove.
happy birthday darius! i hope you grow up to be a good boy! your parents love you very much! thanks for sharing with us your son’s special day…
Thanks for the well wishes mischa’smom! We will make sure Darius gets to read them when he grows up. ^^
You’re welcomed; it’s always a nice feeling to share our joys with you readers~
Happy Birthday to little Darius
What a nice cosy playarea set up for him … Btw, just noticed my #2′s chinese name is the opposite way from Darius .. Heee …
Thanks Mrs Sze.
Yes, I’ve noticed about the similarities of their names when I read one of our posts too. Looks like these are good auspicious characters for our boys’ names. ^^
hiyo! happy birthday to darius. bosco had his bdae party last week. was so tiring right? hehe. seems like a fun party with alot of kids eh..
anyway just wanna check with u, the play yard can lay in ‘L’ shape? i wanna get one for bosco but i wan it to b in ‘L’ shape.
Hi Holly,
Thanks and happy birthday to Bosco too! Indeed it’s quite tiring (esp. with the late nights preparing for it) but had a lot of fun in the end. ^^
About the play yard, yes you can set it up in a ‘L’ shape. However, note that as the play yard itself needs each other’s support to remain sturdy, the ideal configuration will still be an enclosed setup (i.e. a complete square or rectangle).
In this case, the shorter side of the ‘L’ will be without support and might move when pushed. Two solutions to this: (1) place it just in front of a wall as support, or (2) place another piece (the yellow connector) facing outwards after the last blue fence so that it will help add stability.
Similarly on the longer side, add a yellow connector facing outwards to add stability (if it’s not leaning against a wall).
Hope the illustration below helps (ignore the ‘x’):

yeah yeah.. thanks so much. i was still wondering should i be buying the play yard coz bosco is kinda playing with the wire hidden until a telephone table just beside his baby matt. so thinking of getting one to block it off.
Hi Holly,
I see. For our case, our main purpose initially was to constraint Darius into a fixed safe area when needed while we are required to do house chores etc. However he didn’t like being confined so ended up not using it. -_-|
Perhaps you could consider renting it for a month first to ensure it’s viable for your situation, since a Haenim 4-panel play yard can be quite costly and would be a waste if he outgrows it.
Happy Birthday To Dairus!!!!
Thanks Margaret! ^^
Looks like you threw a great party! Thanks for sharing it with us through the pictures.
You are welcomed Mama Peanut. It was indeed a memorable party~
