For a while now, Darius has been waking up at 6am where I’ll give him a morning milk feed. He would sleep back and wake up at around 8am in the morning.
I used to put him on the potty for morning pooping after his breakfast around 10am but after a few misses where he pooped while I was preparing his breakfast, I decided to put him on the potty straight away after he woke up.
I’m glad he knows what he’s supposed to do once I placed him on the potty. As I sing my potty song to him, hold his hand, do my hand sign for poop, making the “hmm…hmm” sound at the same time, he eliminates almost immediately.
Since he has been very regular for weeks now, I decided to place him on the baby toilet seat on top of our regular toilet seat last Sunday. Immediately, he also knew what he’s supposed to do and did not fuss at all unlike the first few times I tried when he was 10 months old.

So, he has officially upgraded now to the big toilet and I’m so happy to have one less chore to do! Just had to flush it all down instead of bringing the potty to the toilet to wash.
He still does not sign back though nor do I know whether he knows that is the sign for potty. Therefore, pooping is still based on me offering it to him. He did poop suddenly without telling on Monday afternoon even though he has already done it in the morning (usually he only poops once a day).
Lately, he has also been too engrossed in his walking that he has no control over his bladder and I’ll find puddles here and there. Sometimes, he stands in the puddles and cries for help because it’s too slippery for him to move. Sometimes, he ignores the puddles and continues his walk til I discovered it. The tiring thing is that he’ll pee on floor, alert me, I’ll bring him to the toilet to empty his bladder, change his pants, after 10-20mins, he’ll do it again! He seemed to have suddenly lose all bladder control when he has always been holding it for at least 1.5 hours for a while now.
I read that this is what is called a ‘potty pause’ period where once he reached a new action milestone, he forgets temporarily how to control his body functions. It happened once when he was beginning to cruise.
All I can do now is wait for him to remember to hold and call for me again before he eliminates, not after. The strange thing is, he can hold while outside in his cloth diapers for a long period and during sleep, but not at home in his pants.
Since he can walk better now, my next goal will be to teach him to go towards the toilet so he can relieve himself and also signal to me his need. I need to be more hardworking, remember not to carry him straight to the toilet and be more proactive in signing the potty sign to him.

I can relate to that! My daughter is just turning one and she has suddenly quit signalling to us when she needs to go for wee at home! Sometimes she even refused to go to the toilet even though i know for sure that she needs to go. Funnily she still let us know when we are out and about so it’s very rare to have ‘accidents’ when we are outdoor.
This is when patience comes in very handy lol!
