We got the Hasbro Playskool Step Start Walk n Ride walker from my family a fortnight ago to complement Darius’ walking efforts. Before this, we were using another walker previously used by Catherine’s nephew (which we had bought for him few years back ^^|) but unfortunately it wasn’t very stable.
With this Playskool walker, Darius did fumble a few times initially, but he soon got the hang of it and started to move more smoothly with it. The roller toy at the front of the walker is quite a distraction for him (he just couldn’t resist spinning it while walking) but on the bright side, it may also be providing him with the motivation to move forward.
To help him achieve his independent walking milestone, we are also propping him up in an independent standing position while facing us. Previously, Darius would just tumble forward with his two feet still stucked on the ground, in his attempt to get closer to us.
However starting from last night, he started to be taking some baby steps before falling into our embrace. This is probably a small improvement but we are glad that he is now a step closer to reaching his independence.
Actually over these past few days, he had been feeling afraid to even stand independently after we let go of his hands, putting his hands into his mouth and whined while he stood very still. This was probably due to the few falls he had previously while he was standing independently. We were glad that he had finally overcome his fears and got back to his usual ‘I-love-walking’ self. ^^|
