Planning for Darius’ 1st Birthday

It is now only less than two months before Darius’ 1st birthday; how time flies!

Although he would most likely not remember how he celebrated this first birthday of his, we still feel that it will be an important day. Not just for Darius, but also for Catherine and I, as we commemorate this day a year ago when we went through Catherine’s eventful delivery and bringing him up well over the past 365 days. So this is going to be more than just Darius’ birth date.

Wow... Our little boy is going to be 1 year old so soon?

With not much time left till this special occassion, we realised it’s about time for us to start planning for it.

I started off by creating an Excel spreadsheet to list down the things we need to do, including items such as the invitation list, cake options, list of buffet caterers, decorations, slideshow and photo album. Phew! Only after I jotted down the items did we realise that there are quite a bit of work to do! o_0|

Our initial plan is to only invite our immediate family members for the celebration. We thought that usually only people with their own children would appreciate and enjoy coming for celebrations like this, and we don’t really have many friends belonging to this category.

We have also thought about inviting readers of our blog to the celebration, since they would be the ones who have ‘experienced’ Darius’ arrival and days of growing up alongside us through our posts, but we ain’t sure if they would be keen to come for the celebration. ^^|

So at the moment, we have only 12 adults and 4 infants/toddlers in our invitation list (ourselves inclusive). With usual buffets requiring a minimum pax of 20, mini-buffets (which usually have minimum pax of 10) would be the viable option for our case.

We have done some googling and here are some of the caterers who offer mini-buffets:

Neo Garden
Empire Food
House of Catering
D’fine
YLS
Shen Lee Catering Services (no website, contact: 62440526 / 93668058)

After reading the online reviews and gathering opinions from forumers, we have selected Neo Garden to be our selected caterer. General feedback about them is that their food is nice, especially their chicken curry dish. Moreover, we have managed to find a lobang to engage their services at a discounted rate. ^^|

As for the birthday cake, we were very tempted to order a 3D cake, available at one of the following service providers:

e-Creative
Cake Avenue
Pine Garden (site currently under construction though)
AiMummy
Glad’s Passion

We haven’t made a decision on this yet, as there are budget constraints and we are currently exploring other alternatives.

Next up are the decorations: So far, we have only bought one item for the decorations — a packet of balloons. It’s just a simple pack of 10 balloons with shiny surfaces and ‘Happy Birthday’ words printed on them, which would be appropriate for our occassion.

As for the other decorations, we are still sourcing out from friends and stores. So far, we have borrowed some from my colleague Jerine, who celebrated her son’s Jarrell’s 1st Birthday Party last November (see Jarrell’s 1st Birthday Party).

Last on our list are the slideshows and photo albums. These are in fact the more important items to take note, as their main purpose is not just to show our guests during the celebration, but also a very good momento for ourselves. We are imagining how Darius will react when he sees himself on the slideshows and photo albums when he grows up. ^^|

I have yet to start on the slideshow though (pressure… pressure…), which will consist of both videos and photos. I’ve to start doing it soon or I might not be able to complete it in time.

As for the photo albums, Catherine is already in the process of consolidating the photos and arranging them. I’ve seen a preview of her hardwork last night and I was really impressed with it. Hopefully the end result will turn out nicely as well.
