Well, the photo and title says it all. ^^
So what had brought me, someone who doesn’t like to buy things in bulk for fear that things might go unused in the future?
The very same reason why many bulk purchases in the local forums are made — PRICE.
It’s common for formula milk powder companies to raise the prices of their products regularly, and although we felt it’s not justifiable, we as consumers don’t really have a choice but to continue buying them at the higher prices. Furthermore, these raises are usually quite substantial. For example, Similac Infant rose more than 10 percent at one go when Darius was just born (see Similac Infant Price Increase).
This time round, it’s the Enfa series that is experiencing a price raise. In particular for Enfapro A+ (Stage 2) which Darius is currently drinking, the expected price raise is around 6 percent.
Having been window shopping for the milk powder at several places recently, I’ve noted these approximate price raises:
Shop & Save and Prime Supermarket: From S$36.50 to S$38.80, a 6.3% increase.
NTUC Fairprice: From S$34.00 to S$38.80, a 11.4% increase.
As can be seen above, NTUC Fairprice’s pricing was previously having the best deal among the three supermarkets, but following this price raise, it has ‘benchmarked’ its pricing with its competitors.
Anyway for convenience sake, I’ve been getting my supply of milk powder from a nearby small convenience store (aptly named ^^|) since it was also selling at S$34.00. The disadvantage is that its stocks tend to run out very quickly. That was also where I first heard about an upcoming price raise.
By coincidence however, I had passed by a chinese medical store at our nearby MRT station, and noticed that it was in fact selling for S$35.50, the cheapest so far (though not a lot of difference then).
So after realising that all stores are (or will be) increasing their prices, it would be wise to snap up whatever stocks that are still selling at the before-price-raise pricing, and that’s how our five tins of Enfapro A+ ended up with Darius. ^^
Sometimes it does take a little kiasu-ism to save a bit of money, especially during these difficult times.

Formula milk sure is pricey. O_o Really hope I’d be able to breastfeed for at least 6 months before I have to start worrying about the costs of milk powder.
Can a tin of milk last more than a week?
My sisters/brother and I have our photos with milk tin pyramid haha. My parents used to keep about 20 empty milk tins then arranged them in pyramid and took photos of us.
Hi Mama Peanut,
Yups guess food is taking the bulk of our expenses on Darius, including ingredients for his solid feedings, besides formula milk. On the bright side, we are saving on disposable diapers ever since we started on EC, though utility bills (due to washing of cloth diapers) might have increased. ^^|
Hi Brownie,
Darius would finish one tin in around 1 week, so these 5 tins we bought will just last us slightly more than a month.
Too bad I can’t do a bigger pyramid, since I tend to throw the empty tins away to save space in our storeroom. I would be interested to see the pyramid photo you mentioned though. ^^
And I thought wavesurfer was quite funny to take photos of Darius with the milk tins. O_o. Didn’t know other people do that too! ^_~
Haha I saw the pics and I was laughing because I didn’t know other people do that too. I will ask my sister to find the pics but it might take her months till she sends me, she always says she forgets / busy.
