More new foods

Darius has his first taste of millet porridge that day and he quite like it. The millet porridge has a nice sweet-smelling aroma and it was my first time eating it too. I was surprised that he finished it faster than when he was eating brown rice. According to this source:

Millet is considered to be one of the least allergenic and most digestible grains available. Millet is tasty, with a mildly sweet, nut-like flavor and contains a myriad of beneficial nutrients. It is nearly 15% protein, contains high amounts of fiber, B-complex vitamins including niacin, thiamin, and riboflavin, the essential amino acid methionine, lecithin, and some vitamin E. It is particularly high in the minerals iron, magnesium, phosphorous, and potassium.”

Once I refrigerated it however, the porridge became dry like paste and the next time I fed him, I had to add more water so he didn’t like it. I noticed that once porridge became watery, he tends to reject and spitted more.

I always look at the time so if he has been eating for 20mins and still not finishing, I’ll just give up feeding. I do not allow him to ‘not eat’ and only take a few mouthfuls out of the 40-50ml serving, so I set this time limit to avoid making him upset with eating, causing problems later.  He’s also always facing me while feeding in the high chair and I’ll let him play with his fav musical toy occasionally. Most of the time, we just sing songs to him or talk to him so he’s fully concentrating on eating. No tv watching.

He still does not open his mouth wide for feeding and shuns away at the very first mouthful. But that’s just him, a very cautious boy who always needs time to warm up to new things. Once I get him to eat the first mouthful, he’ll open a little for more and then when he really gets tired, he’ll start spitting them out, sometimes accompanying with crying.

Hubby Vincent started feeding him breakfast during the last weekend and he ate up without much fussing showing that he’s gradually liking it now. I let hubby fed him the commercial cereal though because feeding porridge requires a ‘higher level’. As a newbie to solid feeding, it is easier for hubby to get the creamy texture of the Healthy Times Brown rice cereal into Darius’ mouth and not let him spit it out. His help took some load off my back and I can eat my breakfast relaxing for a while. I just do my stuff while listening to him doing the singing this time for 10-15mins XD.

This weekend, I might let hubby try the porridge level and see how. I feel that home-cooked cereal is still better than commercial ones.

He has also tried potato yesterday and apple puree the day before.

So far Darius has tried:

  • Organic Brown Rice
  • Japanese white rice, Thai white rice
  • Healthy Times Organic Brown Rice Cereal
  • Organic Millet
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Organic Pumpkin
  • Organic Carrot
  • Potato
  • Apple (steamed)
  • Papaya
  • Mango

Because of the 3-4days wait rule, I still can’t introduce too many foods yet. We are not supposed to alternate new food when introducing and is supposed to keep giving the new food with previously tasted food for at least 3 days.

However, I was impatient and introduced millet for only one day, then switch to apple with his millet the next day, then intro potato yesterday. It was because he seemed to be bored with eating the same brown rice cereal with carrot for so many days, then eating millet with carrot or pumpkin again and these foods were there in my fridge. Anyway, I think potatoes and apples seldom cause allergies. So far he has no problems except he seemed to be pooping twice some days. Too much food or due to the fiber?

Apple: Yesterday, I added the leftover apple puree from that day into his brown rice porridge and he finished them up quite fast instead of turning away. I tasted it myself and it was quite delicious with the apple taste. Brown rice porridge itself is just bland.

Potato: He likes the taste of potato too, better than carrot. He ate the combination of potato, porridge with fish and apple puree, finishing every mouthful without fuss.
