We bought the Thomas & Friends Ball Pit at S$14.95 instead of the usual price of between S$39.90 to S$49.90 last weekend (see Darius’ First Valentine’s Day).
The set came with 40 coloured balls in red, yellow and blue (hidden below the other balls):
Not wanting to overwhelm Darius with so many balls, I only took out 6 of them out, 2 for each colour.
I then proceeded to setup the pit near our fish tanks. Noticing the possible dangers while he’s in it, cushioning was set up using some of the remaining pieces from our alphabet jigsaw mat (see First Attempts at Childproofing), putting them on the ground below the ball pit and also on the wall in case he falls backwards against the wall.
With that, I placed him into the pit and unlike what we predicted, he didn’t complaint about his new environment. He started fiddling with the balls one at a time and although he didn’t seem to be bored with what he was doing, he wasn’t excited over it either.
After a while, I felt that he might be lacking the stimulation to keep his interests for long. So I carried him out and proceeded to play with him on the Pooh mat with other toys instead.
Perhaps Darius is still young to appreciate the ball pit fully, since it should be filled with numerous balls to give the toddler a feeling of ‘swimming in the pool of balls’, which is not achievable at Darius’ current age.
So right now, the ball pit might be kept ‘frozen’ till Darius is old enough to play it again.
