Fisher Price Rainforest Jumperoo

A jumperoo has been on my radar as one of Darius’ development toys since I first read about it on a baby forum, but learning the possible ills of it (such as fracturing the baby’s ankles due to hard impact), Catherine and I have decided against it and got other toys for him instead (see More New Toys for Darius!).

What made us decide to re-approach the idea of getting a jumperoo again was that he had been showing boredom in his rented exersaucer occassionally, but has been enjoying being in his baby walker. We concluded that he did not like to be immobile and prefers sitting in things that allow for some kind of mobility.

Since he has started to show interest in attempting to walk (see Darius’ First Little Steps) but his upper leg muscles are still too weak to support himself, we are thinking of things he can do that will help strengthen his legs. We tried letting him stand up and suppoting himself against sturdy objects such as our coffee table, sofa, the exersaucer etc and occassionally he will be able to hold on by himself for a few seconds.

To help him further, the jumperoo comes into mind since we thought by hopping around in it, it should help develop his leg muscles. However, we were concerned if he will enjoy being in one, given that he can be quite fussy when it comes to new things.

The opportunity to give it a try came upon us as we stumbled upon a demo unit of Fisher Price’s Rainforest Jumperoo at Kiddy Palace. We placed Darius in it and though he was kinda confused initially, he began to move a bit and appeared to show interest in it.

With that, we decided to rent a jumperoo for him. This time round, we rented our item from Go Go Mummy, and we were satisfied with the condition of the jumperoo when it arrived (basically it was as good as new).

Unfortunately, Darius was quite unhappy when we placed him in it, unlike when he was in that demo set, so we brought him out just less than 5 minutes in it the first time. As we gradually accustomed him to his new toy by placing him into it everyday and showing him what to do, he started to be more receptive to his new toy and began to enjoy it more.

Happy in his jumperoo

We had initially placed a cushion below him to prevent any injuries to his feet, but has since removed it since it was hampering his movements. We will monitor him closely and replace the mat when it is necessary again.

It has been a week since we got the jumperoo for him, and although he has not been really jumping in it, he has been showing encouraging improvements by occassionally hopping a little or moving his feet about. We will see how it goes in the remaining three weeks for the rental period.
