Last night, I finally get to witness Darius with his flipping action!
Right now, he only knows how to flip from his back to the tummy down position, but he’s making it look so easy all of a sudden. It’s funny why he had difficulty in achieving this previously.
Looking at how he flips now, I believe one of the key factors in reaching this milestone is the kris-crossing of his legs. With one leg over another, and the shifting of body weight with a push from his bum/waist, he now manages to gain enough inertia to perform the flip.
Of course, Catherine’s daily routine of guiding him practising the flipping motion helps a lot too.
It’s really fun to see him flip, but as Catherine mentioned, it will be tougher for us as we have to keep a close eye on him whenever we leave him lying down on the mat. After flipping over to his tummy down position, he will maintain in that position, trying to crawl a bit (but still can’t) before complainting to us when he’s tired or stucked. We will then have to flip him back since he hasn’t learnt how to do that yet.
There’s also the concern of him hitting the concrete floor or some other objects so we prefer to put him on the Pooh playmat now after clearing his toys and objects around him. Safety is still a major concern for him, especially after we have heard babies falling off beds after learning how to flip/roll.
