Darius at 5 months is getting to be a sulky & clingy baby. He would complain and whine if we leave him lying down for a while without interaction. He is also more emotional now as he’ll be happily laughing at me one minute and turning sulky the next. Recently, he has also started throwing some temper tantrums, twisting and grabbing me roughly or crying out loud if he is drowsy and refuse to sleep.

On the bright side, he smiled very easily whenever we smiled at him and gives us hearty little laughs if we swing him about or play with him. He just dislikes being left alone. He also enjoys music and will give us full attention when we sing to him.

He is developing a bad habit of sucking his fingers on both hands, preferring the right. While other kids prefer their thumb, he’d rather suck his four fingers leaving his thumb out. Then, he’ll pull them out of his mouth and rub saliva all over my hands or any surface they happened to land on. ewww..Previously, he was on teethers but now he has lost interest in them, preferring his own fingers. He has even mastered taking his own pacifier out of his mouth so he can suck his fingers.

His development at the start of 5 months old:

• Turns quickly towards the sound of us singing and stares at us. Will only look at us briefly if we are talking to him.
• Able to sit momentarily without support
• Able to stand firmly on his legs with loose arms underneath his armpits for a while.
• Still can’t flip on his own but can flip to his tummy easily when we turn him to his side first.
• Is ready for solid food, can eat from the spoon, open&close his mouth to swallow.
• Still not playing with his feet yet but likes to kick his legs high up and crash it down several times.
• Experiencing some separation anxiety when certain people carries him.
• Recently, started to sleep on his own without rocking or patting

Behaviour at the start of 5 months old:

• Enjoys babbling more to objects than people and making all kinds of sounds when he’s in a good mood. Once awake in the morning, he’ll start his jabber and being noisy.
• Is starting to like his tummy down position and can push his chest higher on his left hand for a while.
• Enjoys looking at pictures and patterns in books and on clothing.
• Likes to suck his fingers when he is bored or observing.
• Likes to hold his hands together in deep thoughts and scrunching his face.
• Tends to arch his back while in the stroller or seating on sofa.
• No interest in playing with teething toys or any toys. Have to play for him and he’ll observe.
• Always like to look for me and seek my attention if far away from me. Breaks into smiles easily when he spots either papa or mama while being carried by the other.
• Starting to dislike lying down on his back. Will break into a smile and become alert when held in standing position. Especially loves being swing high into the air.
• Smiles and laughs when I smile widely and say ‘smile’ to him with the camera positioned at my forehead level. (That’s how I was able to take photos of him smiling)

Physical Development:

• He drinks 130ml or 170ml per feed at 3 hour intervals. Total amt is about 800-900 ml in a 24hr period.
• He is taking cereals at 1-2 tablespoons per day.
• He measures abt 68 cm in height. (we measured ourselves)
