Yes, this controversial toy is a Walker.
There have been studies which mention that a walker not only does not aid in training a baby in walking, but instead will delay his progression. Studies also say that contrary to many parents’ beliefs, putting a baby into a walker does not guarantee his safety. Instead, there have been many accidents involving walkers. One article in fact brings this argument further by comparing this to the act of ’giving a teen a Ferrari sports car’.
Despite knowing all these, Catherine and I still decided to go ahead and get one for Darius, after much thought to it.
So, what made us decide to get a walker for Darius?
Firstly, the one we bought is a 2-in-1 walker, such that besides acting as a walker, it can be transformed into a rocker too. This will be very useful in motivating Darius to adopt the sitting position, instead of placing him lying on the playmat or leaning him against the cushions of the sofa. This Mama Love walker that we bought has very good back support for babies sitting on it and after testing on Darius at the shop, we were assured that he will be comfortable sitting in it.
Even when we transform the walker back to a ‘walker’, we are not intending to let his feet reach the ground (at least not yet). Instead, we will place the cushion that comes with the package below his feet for him to rest on. In this way, it will not affect his walking abilities and at the same time, we will be minimizing any risks of accident since any movement of the walker can only be achieved by an accompanying adult.
We have also told ourselves that we will not compromise interaction and fun times with him despite the introduction of the walker.
