We were walking around the neighbouring opposite Marsiling MRT station after our morning mass today, and thought we could have Darius’ hair shaved in one of the hairdressing saloons there.
We actually came across quite a few of them, most located in the ‘alleys’ of the neighbourhood, but were quite reluctant to bring him into any of them since some of them looked sleazy while others looked uninviting.
I then brought Catherine to another part of of the neighbourhood where another few more hairdressing saloons were situated. This time round, they looked more inviting as they were situated along the main pathways and the deco looked more professional and clean.
As we were deciding which saloon to patronise, we walked past this saloon with two ladies sitting outside, and they politely asked if we needed a haircut. We thought we could lay our trust in them so agreed to have Darius’ head to be shaved by them.
The middle-aged hairdresser then asked if we wanted to be seated in or outside the saloon for the shave, and we thought the latter would be better so we won’t attract the unnecessary attention of the customers in the saloon in case Darius got cranky. Also, there won’t be noises from the hair blowers and hair floating around that could affect him.
Meanwhile, the younger hairdresser asked if we wanted to keep his hair, and we thought since she’s offering to help collect them for us, we wouldn’t mind keeping them, though we had already kept some when he was 6 weeks old (see Souvenirs from Darius). The lady then took out a red packet in preparation for the collection.
And so the ‘operation’ started, after Catherine was asked to be seated with Darius on her lap. The middle-aged hairdresser would be the one doing the shaving, while the younger collecting the hair shaved. She actually mentioned that some parents would actually let their children wear some unwanted clothes for the shave as the tiny hair dropped onto the clothes would be hard to remove. We thought it would be troublesome to have to make another trip so we decided to proceed on, despite Darius wearing a set of new clothes.
With a towel wrapped around his neck, the hairdresser started shaving his head, starting from the back of the scalp. Darius had just woke up from his slumber not long ago and he was still confused what was going on.
It was after a while later that he started to feel a little uneasy and showed some signs of discomfort. I often read that babies dislike haircuts so we were anticipating his crying outburst. Surprisingly however, except for some complaining sounds, he was well-behaved throughout. Some passer-bys even gathered in front watching his shaving process.
Within 15 minutes, the shaving was completed and we now have a brand new Darius with us!
It looked a little untidy at first as they were still small pieces of hair on his scalp but after we washed his head later in the evening, all these were cleared and his head looked clean shaven again. Still, there were some hair stubs on his head but we thought it was normal since some of his ‘real’ hair had already started to grow since he was 4 months’ old.
We will continue to shampoo his scalp during his routine baths, and hope he will be blessed with full, thick hair on his head soon!
As for the hairbits, Catherine spent a lot of effort cleaning up his clothes. There were indeed a lot of small pieces of hair stucked onto them which were very difficult and tedious to remove. We will keep this in mind when we bring him out for his subsequent haircuts!

I am amazaed that Darius was so calm during the shaving process. Darius videos always make me laugh. Is there special shaver for shaving baby’s hair?
Hehe we were quite surprised about his calmness too; probably he has just woken up so still confused what was happening? ^^|
I believe the hairdresser used a smaller version of the normal portable electric shaver that is used for children on Darius.
