Dar laughing at Daddy's antics

A few days ago, Darius started smiling widely, sometimes even chuckling a little.

He had always been rather stingy with his smiles. When we ah-goos to him, he will ah-goo but not smile.

Then, around the beginning of Oct, he gives me a smile every morning when he first see me and I greet him ‘good morning’. Other than that, he rarely smiles but always look very intently at us or coo at us.

Now suddenly, the smile he gives is wide with his mouth opening, complete with his dimple appearing. And it’s happening more often and frequent throughout the day. When I smile to him, he will always respond with a wide smile. Sometimes, when I reappeared to him after going away to do some chores, he will spontaneously smile or coo at me. That will make me smile and encourages him to smile even more.

His smiles actually look rather like laughter except it does not come with sound. Only sometimes, a chuckle will emerge when he gets really happy.

He especially smiles when I carry him upright in an over-the-shoulder position, walking around the living room. He even coos. For an unknown reason, he just stares fixedly and does not smile when he’s held in a sitting position while I walked around. Maybe because his arms are not free to roam?

It’s interesting that he is starting to recognise objects. He smiles and coos to the solar powered waving kitty we bought from Japan. He’ll even flap his arms a little sometimes. I just have to bring him to the place where the kitty is located and he’ll immediately see it and give a happy smile. He happily coos too for while at the television even when it’s off and at the fishes.

He also likes looking at the mirror as he will bring on a wide smile, coo or chuckle when he catches sight of himself. I always laugh myself seeing him do that. Interestingly, I read from articles that they might think the baby in the mirror is another baby. From this article, it is an important process for self-recognition, being aware of themselves as an individual.

Our favourite activity with him now is holding him by the arms and lifting him high. It makes him open his mouth in a silent laughter each time he’s lifted. Hubby also plays a game of holding his arms and ah-goos to him which makes him smile and chuckles.

I do hope Darius will continue to be a smiley and sociable baby instead of crying or fussing all the time. Really looking forward to hearing his first full belly laughter.
