Today is my friend Jerine’s (blog link) son, Jarrell’s 1st birthday, and she is holding a party for him at a chalet in The Chevrons, a club on the West side of Singapore.

Having bought the gift for Jarrell since a few weeks back already, Cat and I only needed to prepare the diaper bag for Darius before taking a cab down to the venue in the evening.

Hope Jarrell likes his gift~

Initially, we were a little worried that we would feel uncomfortable in the party, as Jerine was the only person we knew and we would be surrounded by strangers. Fortunately, those worries were unfounded, thanks to Jerine’s hospitality and her mum’s friendliness.

Her mum offered to carry Darius as we helped ourselves with the food. As we were eating, we realised Darius was attracting quite a bit of attention, mainly because Jerine’s mum was carrying him and sitting at the entrace of the chalet. So naturally, some of the guests who had just arrived mistook him for Jarrell. ^_^|

Talking about the chalet, the interior was of a lively theme (each of the six chalets had their own themes), with the walls painted in bright colours. Jerine and her husband Desmond had took effort to decorate the room with ballons, banners and even photographs of their family, bringing out the atmosphere for the celebration even more.

Great effort in the deco!

As more guests arrived, the chalet was getting packed and we decided to move out of the chalet and sat at the chairs outside instead, situated beside the swimming pool. The weather was cooling and we ate at ease while Darius was sleeping soundly in the stroller beside us. Thanks to Jerine’s mum’s gentle reminder, we had locked the wheels of the stroller, in case it started to move by itself and fall into the pool.

After our meal, Jerine carried Jarrell in her arms and came to us. We had finally managed to get a good look at the star of the night, since he’s always occupied and surrounded by the other guests.

Cat and Jerine had a nice chat, after which Jerine carried her son lower to check out Darius, who had just woken up. Darius was mostly in a stunned look (probably still not fully awake) while Jarrell tried reaching out to him. However, Jerine did not bring them too close to each other, in case jarrell might hurt Darius in the process of ‘interaction’.

Jarrell's and Darius' first meetup

A while later, it’s cake cutting time, and we moved back to the chalet, carrying Darius in our arms so he could see what was happening and be part of the event. After the cake’s candles were lighted up, Jarrell and his parents stood by the cake and we started singing the birthday song for him as they blew out the candles.

Nice delicious black forest birthday cake

The atmosphere was great, with many parents and their children watching and clapping and enjoying the celebration. As Cat and I don’t really have many close friends (even more rare for married ones with children), it will be a while before we get to attend another one of such parties.

Jerine and Desmond then started distributing goodie bags to the kids, and Darius got one too. I placed the bag in his arms and he didn’t want to let go of it anymore! Ha, guess he didn’t know what he was holding on so tightly though.

"You are not snatching it away from me."

After eating the cake, we went up to the upper deck of the chalet to feed Darius before heading home. We were glad there was a quiet and uninterrupted place for us to do the feeding.

Overall, it was a very nice experience for us since it’s our first time attending a birthday party with Darius. Naturally, thoughts came to mind on what we would plan to do to celebrate Darius’ 1st birthday in 8 months’ time. No concrete ideas yet, thought most likely we will be holding it in our home.

Till then!
