It’s both Hari Raya Puasa and Children’s Day today and thus a public holiday in Singapore.
Catherine has been wanting to visit a salon to do up her hair, but her wish has not been materialised due to her hectic schedules in taking care of Darius. So today is a good day for her to finally be ‘free’ of Darius while I look after him.
After giving Darius a morning bath, Catherine left for Causeway Point and I was all alone with Darius in the house. This wasn’t the first time I have been alone with him, so I wasn’t really nervous. All I know was that since I was then the sole caregiver, I had to be even be more committed and careful to ensure considerable attention was given to him.
Fortunately, he wasn’t cranky that day so I just needed to play with him a bit, change his diapers and gave him a feed. Time flew by pretty quickly and before I knew it, Catherine had SMSed me that her hairdo was about to complete, and I could start preparing to go over.
Before she left the house, I’ve told her that Darius and I would go over to Causeway Point to meet up with her. I thought it was a good opportunity for us to take a walk at the shopping mall as a family together and I’m sure Catherine would prefer this arrangement too.
Not expecting that I would need to be going over so soon, I had to quickly get Darius’ stuffs prepared for the outing. By the time I was done, another 10 to 15 minutes have passed. I then started dialling for a cab and had to wait for another 10 minutes before my booking was accepted. Looked like the taxis were pretty busy on this holiday.
I then carried Darius and the diaper bag slinged on the left arm, while my right arm carried the folded up stroller. Despite having both arms filled, I still had to stumble with the house keys to lock the doors etc.
Upon reaching the void deck, I waited patiently while passers-by looked at me with a strange look, probably wondering what’s a guy doing with the baby and all the stuffs alone.
When the cab finally arrived, the driver was helpful as he helped placed the stroller in the car boot. I then sat in the rear seat after I informed him of my destination. I’ve always been seeing Catherine carrying Darius in the cab, so this was the first time I’m taking up that role.
There were several drop-off points in the Causeway Point area, and I had specifically told the driver to drop me at that particular taxi stand which was more isolated than the others so I won’t be attracting too much attention.
Upon reaching the destination, the helpful driver took out the stroller and helped assembled it. I thanked him and after pushing the stroller to a safe and quiet location, I shoved the bag beneath the stroller before placing Darius on it. I then mounted the newly bought hoop (aka ‘Activity Center’)(see Out & About Activity Centre for Darius) on it so that he would have something to attract his attention.
With all these things done, I met up with Catherine and we had a great time together, so the efforts were worth it! ^^
Through this experience, I then got to know how difficult it was for a single parent to bring a baby out. I probably wouldn’t have been able to make it without the driver’s assistance.
