Hubby and I are rather ‘kampung people’ at heart. That is, we enjoy natural environments and would rather go for nature walks and exploration than shopping at the malls for our outings. It’s probably because we both grew up in the rural areas where we always run outside for play, surrounded by grass and trees. We thus hope to introduce Darius to nature too when he’s older.
Right now, Darius is still too young to enjoy the outdoors so it has been pretty boring for us these few weekends. I find that when we are out to eat, we would often end up in Kiddy Palace or place with kiddy stuffs to buy things for him. We don’t own a car so we would end up rushing back before 5pm to beat the taxi surcharge. Outings thus turned out to be rather short and unfulfilling.
Today, we decided to go Sun Plaza to eat at the kopitiam foodcourt. We went there after his feed at 3pm to eat our lunch and again ended up at a small kiddy shop to see baby stuff.
Soon it was 4 plus. As there was no nursing place, we wondered how we were going to feed him at half past 5. We decided disappointedly that we should be heading home. We then headed to the taxi stand few minutes before 5pm and there was no taxi in sight. Clever drivers hiding somewhere?
A sudden thought came over me. Maybe we should just walk over to a park some distance away instead of heading home in a taxi, since we could not avoid the surcharge anymore. Told hubby about it and he excitedly agreed. He’s usually more enthusiastic than me about nature walking. We bought lao zhen ji fried squid and slurpee to eat and drink while we walked slowly to the park pushing Darius.
The park had a nice entrance with big trees but the interior was rather bare with young trees that did not provide enough shade.
The blue sky was fantastic though and there was a breeze.
Darius slept soundly in his stroller though the afternoon sun was bearing down on us and it was very hot. It wasn’t a really pretty and functional park so after walking a while, we sat down to eat our squid, chatted and took some photos. It was nice to be outdoors and I was glad I made the decision not to rush home.
When it was time to feed Darius, we pushed him to a bench for some shade. I discovered he was already sweating when I picked him up. Oops…we didn’t know it was so hot for him, poor thing. How did he managed to sleep like that? I sat on the bench and fed him with a slight breeze blowing.
It got uncomfortable when the sun suddenly shifted location and started peering at us through the tiny shade we had. Plus, there was this man with his grandson in a stroller who walked into the park and immediately stopped and stared at us. As if I’m exhibiting ‘how to feed a baby’.
It was really irritating but we couldn’t do anything to chase him away. I got hotter and hotter under their gaze and finally passed Darius to hubby who fed him while standing and blocking their gaze. He finally strolled away when they couldn’t see ‘show’ anymore. That is one thing I disliked about feeding baby in public. Just why do other kids like to stand and stare so much and their parents just let them?
After the feed at about 6plus, we left for home and decided to walk the entire trip back. I did not put him back into the stroller because he can look around the natural environment and learn.
We took turns carrying him under the setting sun to admire the grass, plants, sky along the way. Along the way, we met a cute little girl who was excited to see Darius and let her ‘sayang’ him for a while.
It was tiring carrying him so when we reached a junction, we finally placed him back into the stroller where he slept again.
By the time we reached home, it was 7 plus and we were really exhausted. We felt satisfied however that we had gotten a nice walk with Darius. Looking forward to more of such trips! However, I’ll need to have a good nap before that to have enough energy… hee.
