Our Brave Little Boy

Following Darius’ 6 Weeks Examination, it’s time for him to take his first vaccination jab since he left the hospital.

We have planned to give him the 6-in-1 vaccination so that he will only need to take 3 jabs in his first 6 months instead of at least 5 jabs for the other options. We didn’t really compare the prices for the other options since Darius’ comforts would be one of the main factors considered, since the lesser number of jabs would mean lesser pain on him.

So we went down to the same GP clinic at 9 plus, thinking that there would be less people and thus a shorter waiting time. Alas, we were wrong and had to wait for five numbers before ours were called up. Darius was still sleeping comfortably in Catherine’s arms, not knowing what was ahead for him. We were worried if we waited too long, he might start getting hungry (as his next feeding time was around 10am) and become cranky.

Our turn came just before 10am, and after the doctor went through some briefing on the vaccines available, he started to prepare for the vaccination. Darius had awoken by then.

Under the doctor’s instructions, Catherine only needed to maintain her current cradling hold on Darius but with him sitting on her thighs. I then pulled down his pants (with his diaper still intact) for the injection on his thigh to be performed.

Catherine and I breathed in deeply while Darius looked as us just before the injection. When the doctor pushed the needle into his buttocks, we were expecting Darius to cry out badly but to our amazement, he only gave a short wrinkled look, and returned back to normal after that. He didn’t even let out any cry.

We were surprised and proud of Darius’ tolerance of pain. Although we had thought that perhaps he was too young to truly feel the pain, I later thought otherwise as I’ve seen/heard other babies his age (or younger) crying out badly after their vaccinations.

And so there was all to it, and once we were out of the consultation room, we prepared Darius’ feeding and started feeding him. He looked as if nothing had happened and even smiled mildly.

"Oh? You mean that's all?"

Hopefully his subsequent vaccinations will go as smoothly too, though the doctor did hint us that it gets tougher for the child to sit through the injections peacefully once they grow older.
