On the 27th of August, I was taking pictures of Dar with the camera and dangling the strap like a pendulum at him when he suddenly gave me a smile. A lingering one, not like those that appear and disappear quickly after a milk feed.

Yes, it was his first conscious smile at me! I call it conscious because he was staring at me before and knew that I was dangling the strap and playing with him. Usually he would only smile in his sleep after feeding and that is pretty common for babies as a reflex action.

I thought it was just a one-off thing but I proceeded to do more of the pendulum action, smiling at him and he produced the second, third and fourth long smiles each time! My camera kept snapping, afraid I’ll be unable to catch them but luckily they lingered long enough. He gave four smiles and no more.

Everytime I catch his smile, my heart melts. It being so rare makes it all the more special. Rare because he’s usually either staring at me or screwing up his face to cry. I felt priviledged that he produced them only for me.
