About Diapering

Lately, we have been changing Dar’s diaper less and less often.

A look at my notebook shows 4 or 5 times a day only, gasp! compared to 6-8 times during the first month.

It started after we switched to using disposable diapers fully a few days after his full-month. It’s been 11 days since. Finally…we have joined many others in contributing more to environmental waste.

The reason for not using BW cloth diapers was not because of convenience so we’ll wash less often. Nor because the Nappy Rash Cream made us less worried about him developing nappy rash.

It’s because they leaked…

Yes, I hate to admit this because I held the BW cloth diaper in high regard pre-delivery, thinking it is such a great product.

Darius started outputing more a few days before his first month and subsequently. We had to use a normal cloth nappy to wrap him on top of using the cloth diaper because his pee would shoot out through the sides of the cloth diaper or leaked from behind.

Once, I had to change my clothing three times because the three times, he peed while feeding on my lap. Soaked my clothes even with the extra white nappy underneath his cloth-diapered butt.

He also needed to change every one two hours because the inserts would soak through the covering and he would start crying. Good for his awareness of urinating but bad for us to have to constantly soothe him, wondering if it’s due to the diapers or due to his restlessness.

So why the leak? We guessed that the sides of the cloth diaper were too large for his thighs. The cloth still left a gap and did not gather fully around his thighs. His output might also be too much for the insert.

So we gave up. We tried total disposable diapers for one day and it was a bliss. He slept longer and was less fussy.

I even tried to go back to cloth diaper again for two times the next day but they barely survived past two hours. Strangely, one even immediately wetted through the behind. (The insert was supposed to absorb the water and the material outside would be dry). From then on, it’s been disposable diapers.

Disposable diapers truly live up to their name. Ultra-absorbent, no leakage. The surface would remain dry for a good nine to twelve hours. He doesn’t cry to change unless he pooped. Hence, we change him less often now.

I’m still worried about nappy rash even with the powerful cream so we try to keep the diaper on him for five hours max. during the day, only slightly more throughout the night (like from 10 plus til his near-to-morning feed) so he can sleep through. Besides, if we prolong the change, the diaper gets really heavy and Dar usually enjoys that little bit of bottom-airing-time.

I’m still hoping to switch back to those cloth diapers when his thighs get fatter. Because cloth seemed more comfortable than paper for him and they are more economical and environmental friendly.

Not forgetting, we spent quite a lot on purchasing them.
