We have been a loyal Similac user since Darius was born, and even in the hospital, we have explicitly requested for this brand of milk to be served to him.
Checking out the prices at the grocery stores during then, we noticed that it was one of the most pricey milk powder available in the market, but believing that it is good for Darius and since he had no issue with it, we would continue to stick with it.
The last time I bought the Similac Infant Stage 1 (900g) milk powder at NTUC Fairprice at S$35.60, after checking out the prices at other stores, which were slightly higher but also within this range. That was only like a week back.
But alas, when I went back to NTUC to get our next tin for Darius, we discovered that the price has gone up to S$39.50, more than a ten percent price increase!
Initially I thought it was a misprint or something, so I went to other supermarkets to check out the price, and indeed, the prices were more or less the same.
As new parents, we are not sure if such sudden price increase of milk powder is common. Nevertheless, we have no choice but to accept the new pricing, unless we decide to switch brands.
I’ve also noticed that the price increase seems to only be applicable to the Infant milk powder (they have different stages), which is weird as I thought the milk company will rather encourage new parents to pick up their products, instead of shunning them away right from the start?
On the bright side, I’ve managed to purchase a tin from a neighbouring small provision shop instead, which is priced cheaper at S$38.50. Hope the shop doesn’t increase the price soon…

Hi! Was just googling the similac price increase and came accross your blog. Am just wondering where you bought the cheaper milk from? I also have the same problem but compounded by two as I have twins!! Two tins a week is certainly not cheap!
I agree; now the milk powder cost is one of the highest cost expended for our babies. ^^|
I bought the cheaper milk from the provision shop near my house at Woodlands. You may wish to email me at sgwavesurfer AT gmail.com so I can provide you with the exact address. ^^
Thanks> I ended up buying from carrefour with the POSB card which gives you 5% off. It is still so expensive!
Sally,
I see. From what I’ve checked from the supermarkets, they are often selling their stuffs more expensive than those in the neighbourhood shops and chinese medical halls.
I even found out a price difference of close to S$5 for a pack of diapers between the supermarkets and neighbourhood shops!
Hi. I believe the rise in cost of infant formula is due to MOH’s move to support breastfeeding. All milk companies are not allowed to give free samples or offers for infant formula; applicable only for milk for 6 mths and above.
Maybe you are right, but seeing that the prices for those milk powder for above 6 months also increased at the same time, seems like the only people who really stand to gain are those milk powder companies.
