An story to share about parenting.
Choosing Apples
A person receives his first education from his family and most importantly, his mother. A famous US psychologist wanted to study how a mother could influence a person for life. He sent out letters inviting the world’s top 50 successful people and 50 criminals to talk about their mothers.
Two letters striked him deeply out the 100 he received. Both talked about a same incident, the sharing of apples. One was a person having a successful career in the White House; another was a criminal.
The criminal wrote: When I was young, my mum brought out a dish of apples. I caught sight of the Biggest and reddest among them all and wanted it badly. She put down the apples and asked my brother and me, “Which apple do you want?”
I almost told her I wanted the biggest and reddest one but my brother said it first. She heard it, glared at my brother and said,” My children should learn to leave the best for the others and not think of themselves.”
I immediately switched my stance and said to my mum, “I wanted that smallest one, I’ll leave the biggest to brother.”
Mum smiled at that and gave me a kiss. As a reward, she gave me the Biggest and Reddest apple.
From then on, I learnt to LIE. Later, I learnt to fight, steal, snatch. For things that I wanted, I would do all sorts of things to get them. And today, I ended up in jail.
The successful person wrote:When I was young, my mum brought out a dish of apples. My brothers and I all clamoured for the Biggest, Reddest one.My mum took hold of it and said, “This apple is the juiciest and everybody wants it. Very good! The three of you would each work on a part of the lawn in front of our house. Whoever does the fastest, the best job in trimming the grass would get this Biggest and Reddest one.”
We took up the tasks and I won The Apple. I appreciate my mother for letting me know this simple fact: If you want the best things in life, you should work hard to be number one. This is what was practised in my household. If we want more of something or the best things, we have to compete with each other to get it.
The hand that rocks the cradle, rules the world.
A mother is a child’s first teacher in life. You can teach him to Lie, or you can teach him to be a honest person who works hard to be number one in life.
