Infant baptismI’m a Roman Catholic by birth and my hubby converted to Roman Catholicism during our courtship. Hence, we will naturally want our baby to be baptised in church once he’s born, to ‘bring him to Christ’. For this, we also have to specially choose names from truly Christian names, names that are associated with Saints. That’s how we found ‘Darius‘. (Saint Darius) It is a bibilical name with several meanings, one of which is ‘he that informs himself’, meaning knowledgeable.

Baptism of a child will initiate him into our christian faith and when he’s older, we’ll bring him to church for Sunday classes where he’ll learn about God. It does not automatically make my child a true Christian with a ticket to heaven, rather it helps him to know about God and be blessed with his favors. Whether he decide to continue to follow God when he’s older will be his own personal choice but when we attend church regularly as a family, we can all grow as a part of the community that follows God.

I’m more of a Sunday Worshipper than a really devout christian but what I gained all these years from attending church service and Sunday classes did help me in my well-being. When I’m faced with difficulties, I prayed to God and it relieved my mind. Also, children who have faith are usually better behaved.. hee, probably because we were raised with the theory that ‘God is watching your every move, you better not do bad things’. We are also more positive with life as we believe ‘things will come, in his time’.

Canon Law requires that parents ought to baptise their infants as soon as possible. However the Priests must see that adequate spiritual preparation is given to parents regarding their role as Catholic parents. It is highly recommended that such preparation to be given preferably before the birth of the child.

So, we found out that we need to attend three baptism preparation classes to prepare ourselves for this infant baptism. The third class required the God-parent to attend.

What is a God-parent?

Every Christian child requires a God-parent preferably of the same gender, to be a ‘supporting friend’ who assists the parents of the child to bring up the child in the Christian faith. They are helping to guide the child so they must be baptised and confirmed Christians and sufficiently well-connected to the family.

So we cracked our heads wondering who to ask to be the God-parents of our child. Finally, hubby found out that his colleague is a Catholic and asked him. He agreed saying, ‘it’s actually an honour or a will of God that he’s being asked’. So glad!! So now, all we have to do is to attend the baptism preparation class and then wait for the arrival of our little one. :)

Hubby has booked for 11th of May. So May will be a busy month for us, attending antenatal class on Saturday and baptism preparation class on Sunday.
