I got to know about this book, ‘How Smart Is Your Baby?’ and its website from a chance surfing. Reading about the concepts got me to buying the book with another book,’ How to Teach Your Baby to Read’ at Kinokuniya. We should start to read earlier instead of waiting til the baby is born so we have time to prepare for his education.

In fact, the most crucial time for children is the period from birth to 6 years of age. Researchers have concluded that “The production of synapses in the brain is strongly linked to the ability to learn and it peaks around 6 years of age”.

From the website:

‘How Smart Is Your Baby? provides parents with all the information they need to help their baby achieve his or her full potential. The authors first explain the newborn’s growth and development, including all of the critical stages involved. They then guide the parents in creating a home environment that enhances and enriches brain development. A developmental profile, which parents complete, allows Mom and Dad to track the progress of their child, to determine the baby’s strengths, and to recognize where additional stimulation and opportunity are needed. Most importantly, parents learn how to design an effective and balanced daily program for physical and intellectual growth.’

We are not ‘kiasu’ parents in that we want our baby to be a genius but we believe in the concept from the book, ‘The brain grows with use’. If a child is not given stimulation earlier when the brain is still developing, he may have more difficulties in learning later. We are just helping him to have a smoother path in learning. If he could talk earlier due to our stimulation and get to learn more words at a younger age, why not?

I’m still reading the earlier chapters of ‘How Smart Is Your Baby’ and the theories and exercises are pretty interesting. They talk about stimulating his organs, such as eyes, ears, hands and also letting him know about movement. I’m sure we’ll have fun trying them out with our baby and our bonding with him will increase.

We are also doing pre-natal education in that, we would talk and sing songs to the baby through the fetal microphone every night. This is to help stimulate and grow his brain synapses so he would be more receptive to learning when he’s born. An unborn baby can actually hear sounds from 5 months onwards (we started from 19 wks) and they love music. From 8 months onwards, he has fully developed and is able to learn languages and movement just as if he’s outside the womb.

We love interacting with Baby Darius every night and he will kick my tummy when we start talking or singing. Most of the time, he kicked where the microphone was. This showed that he knew where the source of the sound was.

Today, I’m starting to let him hear the Mozart Songs which we got from the Prenatal Heart Listener Package in the morning, 10mins session only, so as not to tire him out.

We hope with all this educating, he’ll have a smoother path for him later on in life.
