We waited a long time for the detailed fetal scanning in TMC. Seemed that each couple took some time to do the scanning and it dragged. I noted that most of the ladies were having huge tummies and they were supposedly at 5th month too. My tummy looked small compared to them. Finally we managed to go in for the scanning after almost an hour.

We saw baby again looking like a skeleton. We could clearly see baby’s eye sockets and features. While waiting, baby was moving around but once the probe is on my tummy, baby did not want to move much. It seemed baby was quite shy and cautious of foreign objects. We only saw baby’s arms moving a little and gave a little jump. It made the work of the sonographer easier though since baby’s just lying on his back.

When she tried to see the gender of the baby however, she said, “his legs are firmly closed…can’t see”. We were immediately disappointed as we really wanted to know. She then went through other scans and turned the monitor away from me. I could only stare at the ceiling while she did the probing. Hubby could see what she was doing though and I envied him. She measured the length of the arm bone, the leg bone, checked the heart with the blood flow, checked the kidneys, and the brain. She also checked the spine and measured the weight. Baby is at 280g now. They do not measure the length anymore since the baby is bigger and curled up.

The Tedious Gender Search
Finally, she went back to the task of searching for the XX or XY again. She mentioned that baby’s legs were still pressed together so she did some jiggling with the probe on my tummy to get baby to move. She also looked at the baby from the bottom, cross-sectional. She then asked me to turn to the left side, then to the right side, then back to the centre again to see if baby will move. I did this a couple of times. We got more and more anxious. Finally, she turned the monitor to us and triumphantly said, “There! A boy!” We looked to where she indicated and saw a little round thing between his legs from the bottom. A sense of relief and mix feelings passed over the both of us. So baby is ‘Darius’ now? This was the second time she checked and so to double confirm, she checked a third time and declared that baby’s a boyboy for sure. She then marked the area with ‘XY’ which amused us.

We visited Doctor Wong after that and she was happy for us because she couldn’t see the gender last time. She went through the report with us and everything was great. Baby’s development is perfectly normal. She mentioned that the ETD (at 17th July08) of the machine was very close to what she has estimated for us at 19th July so it meant that the baby is developing well and having the correct weight growth. I should not worry then that my tummy seemed small and baby’s nutrition is not enough.

For supplements, she prescribed me fish oil capsules which is good for the brain development of the baby and the usual calcium and multi-vitamin supplements.

So from now on, baby has promoted. He’s Baby Darius now, no longer just a baby. We can call him by his name and visualise him better. At last, we are no longer faced with the dilemna of choosing blue or pink when looking at baby products. ^_^
