Yesterday night at 9pm, we went for the long-awaited second visit with much excitement, worries and anticipation.
I’ve been feeling restless these few days trying to quell the worries that the baby is not fine. I think it’s because I’ve been reading too much in the forums about foetus not having heartbeats and etc… but if I don’t read, I’ll miss out on some important knowledge shared by others too…
So we went to the nearby Woodlands night clinic and waited for quite a while after the scheduled appointment time. It wasn’t too long however and the first thing Dr. Wong did was to ask me to take my weight. (the urine test and blood pressure test was taken earlier outside by the receptionist). Surprisingly, it was still roughly the same as three weeks ago. I think I haven’t been eating much.
Subsequently, we did the ultrascan and the moment she placed the probe on my stomach, we could see the sac with a black mass and white mass. For a moment, I was disappointed that we can’t make out much from the white mass. However, she did some shifting and adjusting and presto! she pointed out this little blinking thing to me on the screen and said it was the bb’s heartbeat. From there, we could suddenly make out that the right was the round head and the left was the pointed buttocks(due to the spine) and even hands and feet. At first it was quiet. The legs then started kicking a bit. Both of us were pretty amazed as we thought baby would be quite still at this point in time.
I asked Dr worriedly, “if I’m not eating too well, will it affect the baby’s growth” (he appear to be quite small at 2.2cm, only one cm growth). She said this growth is fine for 8 weeks and that he is absorbing mostly from my ‘store’. Mostly bb will take in fluid so I should keep drinking fluid to prevent dehydration.
All of a sudden, Dr pointed out that bb’s hands was ‘waving’ and as we looked at the screen, he started kicking his legs in the air. My hubby was laughing and thought it was really cute! I tried to suppress laughing because when I laughed the whole screen shook since the probe was on me. We looked at it for a while and hubby was really excited and happy. Then, Dr Wong took a still picture, drew an arrow across to indicate the length and printed out the picture.
She also found out the ETD and said it’s more of less confirmed at this stage. It will be on the 19th of July 2008.
We discussed a bit more about our next visit which will be about 11 weeks. We will be doing the NT scan to check for Down Syndrome abonormalities at Thomson Medical Centre. We scheduled it to be on the 2nd of January, one day after New Year’s Day. Hubby will take leave to accompany me.
Hubby was disappointed that he never thought to bring along the digital camera which could video to videocam the active baby. He didn’t think the baby would already be active at this stage. He asked Dr whether he could bring it on our next visit. Dr was really funny. “Yes you can(with a smile), but pls don’t take me(pleading smile).” Her expression was so funny and made us laugh. She’s really a nice friendly doctor and someone with a good sense of humor. I wouldn’t like doctors who are too serious and pro.
This is the Ultrascan picture of our little dear. I feel this machine is much better, as compared to the previous picture, my womb area seemed more distinct.

To the left, sticking out is his tiny leg. The area where the line ends is his spine. To the right is the big rounded head. Now he’s just in his ‘chibi-proportions’. Big head, small body..heee.
I still feel a little weird imagining the small little pea waving and kicking legs in my tummy now. I guess reality finally hit us that yes, we are going to be parents. XD
She also gave me some vomit medicines and more folic acid as I have been vomiting a bit lately. The total cost at $104 was quite affordable. The pills cost total $9 and the ultrascan at only $35.
Stats:
Mummy: Weight= 47.6 kg
BB: Length= 2.22cm
ETD: 19th July 2008
